Can't Explain EP

photo:
a propos:
With sounds as smooth as butter and grooves as juicy as jam fillings, Joe The Baker Gill has cooked up two fondant slabs of disco funk right here. There's a sweaty post-punk sheen to "Can't Explain" thanks its slap-happy bassline, fuzzy guitars and sultry vocals. "Mamba Gascoine", meanwhile, is a foggier, swampy slice of cosmic, dub-minded funk designed for the darker, heads-down moments. Remix-wise the ever-reliable Emperor Machine step forward with two epic, 10-minute workouts that explore every possible corner of Joe's jiggling, party-friendly groove.

Bastedos returns hosting two disco objects lovingly versioned by Nad. One side features the vocal talents of a mystery man with low riding balls imploring those gathered to hear him to 'join his party'...if you look at his backside, so to speak, you will head off down to sunny rainbow filled Castro for a happy sing along and dancing tune versioned from vaults of Moby Dick.

Liza Liza

photo:
a propos:
Reissue of Elias Rahbani & His Orchestra's super rare Arabic Disco holy grail 'Liza Liza' on the original Lebanese 'Voix De L'Orient' label. Recorded pre-Civil War at a time when Beirut was known as the 'Paris of the Middle East', a luxurious holiday destination and flourishing trade centre. The title track is totally out of this world, perfectly blending Eastern & Western vocals, instruments and musical influences with a driving disco bassline to create an irresistible floor filling cosmic odyssey. The flipside features the even more out-there 'From The Moon' a fantastic tripped out psychedelic disco funk monster, followed by the dreamy accordion-led 'Summer Love'. Also boasting one of the sexiest covers in disco history further illustrating the liberal thinking and western influence in Lebanon at the time. Highly recommended!

No Turning Back

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Having been one of the bands that has spearheaded the resurgence in deep, gritty funk and soul for over 10 years, and having collaborated with luminaries like Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, Billy Wooten, Sir Joe Quarterman and most recently ex James Brown vocalist Martha High, Speedometer enjoy a worldwide reputation as a class act.And now in 2015, band leader Leigh Gracie and the group bring a welcome spotlight to a fresh vocal talent - James Junior.James has been part of the UK soul and gospel scene mainly as an in-demand session vocalist and arranger. He has generally stayed of out the limelight until now. Having grown up on a diet of classic soul and Motown, his collaboration with Speedometer on this album brings together the band's heavy grooves with James' rich vocal tones to produce an authentically old school sound - yet totally fresh. You only have to listen to the album opener Don't Fool Yourself to immediately grasp that this young man's voice is the perfect choice to grace this new Speedometer collection. Likened to a young Donny Hathaway or Stevie Wonder, James has all the perquisite tone, phrasing and soul to make a big impact on a world awoken to genuinely soulful sounds by acts such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, but is also fully adept to adapt to the varying genres Speedometer specialise in - the latin/bossa nova groove of the title track No Turning Back, the deep, funky afrobeat of Troubled Land and the stomping Northern Soul style track Homebreaker.James Junior gives the band an extra dimension and purpose but more importantly gives James the spotlight which he deserves. And No Turning Back is just the beginning...

Dinking In The Shadows Of Zizou

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Zinedine Zidane has never been to Leamington Spa. TIP! Perhaps the most complete footballer of the modern era, the man nicknamed ‘Zizou’ won everything there was to win with France and Real Madrid. “Football was the easy part”, he stated, when asked about his childhood in the ghettos of Marseille. “Music was important”.If Zizou were ever to grace this English spa town in the West Midlands, he might find two young men chipping (or ‘dinking’) a football back and forth with a set of goalposts between them. They are trying to land the ball on the crossbar. For one of those men, football is important. Music is the easy part.Bastien Keb is a prodigiously talented multi-instrumentalist, who makes a living writing music for TV and film. A guitarist first and foremost, you’ll hear him play trumpet, bass, drums, flute and more on this debut record, as well as layering his voice to strangely moving effect. His music belies a love for Curtis Mayfield and Sun Ra, though his voice might suggest Bon Iver - a world away, but here it makes perfect sense. He channels 80s soul with his bass, the New Orleans of The Meters with his drums. He looks to Broadcast and Flying Lotus for direction: how do you assimilate such diverse influences, and come up with something wholly modern, and wholly your own?Bastien Keb tries to hit the bar one more time before sunset calls time on the game. He senses movement from the corner of his eye. There’s a man at the other end of the pitch. Tall, graceful, with a shaved head and flawless control, the man dinks the ball against the bar, time after time. It can’t be...can it?

Limitless & Free

photo:
a propos:
Gerry Rooney (Black Cock) and Joel Martin (Quiet Village) return with two strong cuts on new label Love Shot Records! Opener "El Dorado" is a curious affair, taking loops from a long-forgotten, disco-era Spanish dance record and turning it into a rolling, late night chugger. Arguably even better is "Limitless & Free", which cuts up and rearranges a suitably obscure chunk of stoner funk-rock. Wisely, they emphasize the low-slung groove, rising strings and swirling synthesizers, occasionally utilizing select sections of the original's sleazy, come-to-bed vocal.

No Funk No Chop is our vinyl only series of dancefloor killers we picked up whilst "on de road". Robert Helms is probably the most requested bomb from Stevie Kotey DJ sets. Blowing people minds on the Adriatic dance floors of Electric Elephant 2014. The secret weapons can no longer remain a secret. Loving rearranged by the super talented Raphael Top Secret, by way of his Brussels emporium. "Wanna see you dance"? Enough said! Albion steps up with the in demand Experience 7 smasher "Disco Choc" feel the vibes wash over you as you take another sip of that cocktail. Last stop is Afro National "Push Am Forward" Forward we go with the mysterious Afro National straight out of Sierra Leone. This track is epitome of joyous afro funk. Don't let ride end!!
