BACK IN STOCK Such was the warmth of reception granted NuNorthern Soul's debut EP of Ryo Kawasaki music, the label's Phat Phil Cooper has decided upon a follow up. And having made over 25 albums in his almost five decade long career, there's plenty of Ryo's music to choose from.Once again, Phil Cooper has chosen to concentrate on Kawasaki's mid 1970s to early 1980s period, a time which saw the guitarist living in New York, surrounded by and often playing alongside some of the finest jazz players of the era. It was a time of much experiment with jazz music and few things propel Kawasaki more than experimentation. His mid 1970s period saw him explore what was to become known as jazz fusion music, a sometimes heavy-sounding variation, wild with revolutionary, new electronic sounds and steeped in funk and rock influences. From that period Kawasaki lead several album projects and the band Golden Dragon, upon whose recordings Kawasaki's famous, personally modified guitar synthesizer really comes to the fore. As he moved into the 1980s some of his work was undertaken solo, Kawasaki mining the possibilities offered by the guitar synthesizer and also newly released drum machines before he span off on the trajectory of computer programming and then, equally unexpected, to Estonia, where he has lived for almost two decades.Pressed on 12 Inch Vinyl with a Printed inner & Outer Sleeve with bonus art frame size Poster.

Selected Works 1982 To 1989 (Record Store Day 2020)

photo:
a propos:
Rare tracks taken from key albums from Spanish / Balearic Islands musician Joan Bibiloni’s extensive career focusing on the period 1982 to 1989. This will continue the NuNorthern Soul Selected Works series, following on from the x2 Ryo Kawasaki EPs released. There’s a touch of Brazlian rhyme and Ivan Lins-esque sophisticated swing on NuNorthern Soul`s compilation focused on the output of Mallorquin virtuoso, Joan Bibiloni. Selected Works 1982 To 1989 pulls together 5 essentials from the guitarist, who grew up in the artistic milieu centred around the poet, and author, Robert Graves, and his island home, Canallun, in the isolated island village of Deia. An experience that had Bibiloni witness the birth of Soft Machine, and learn his chops, coming up through prog – contributing to sides by Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers and Gong. His own music mixes in flamenco influences from the Spanish mainland and those from North Africa, Algeria and Morocco. Creating a fluid fusion of tradition, folk, musics, and jazz. Basses are slapped, or fretless. Songs are wordless scats of blue seas and matching horizons. Pat Metheny, and Jaco Pastorious-like, in places, his incredible playing is evident throughout. El Cumpleaños de Jaimito is boogie that bumps like Lee Ritenour jamming with Kasso and Yuji Toriyama, while conversely, Alfonsina Y El Mar is a shimmering, intricate, ambient, microtone mirage.Sleeve notes will come from interviews conducted by Marc Rowlands plus the RSD release will contain a poster of the front cover sleeve artwork.

Iwishcan William (Record Store Day 2020)

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Washington collective, The 3 Pieces, privately-pressed Iwishcan William on their own DL Records in 1982. The 12 has Discogs, for one, confused. Is it soul, rap, jazz, go-go, funk, electro, or educational? By nature of its birthplace and date of birth, it`s all of those.Synths shimmer in harp-like glissando. The bass grumbles, rumbles, machine-made. The beat pops and locks. The whole thing grooving and exuding positivity. One part the cosmic funk of say Cloud One`s Patty Duke. Another, the balearic chug of Will Powers` Adventures In Success. Like Brother D it looks to “agitate, educate, and organize”, and stirs in the sentiments of Razzy`s I Hate Hate. Imagine if the Last Poets jammed with sister Sarah Webster Fabio. Keys parp like car horns, a real trumpet blows a Don Cherry solo, but the track really revolves around its sweet Sesame Street call-and-response chorus:“I wish love. I can love. I will love. I am love.”Swiss gentleman DJ and Phantom Island resident, Lexx, produces a killer remix - smoothing out the OG`s jerky edges, upping its sophistication. Making clear the contributions of Lexx` new bubbling electronics. rescuing a clipped guitar, previously lost deep in the mix, and moving the children’s voices to the fore. Ensuring you’ll remember that ““I am” is the glory of a wish come true.”Idjut Boy Dan Tyler then ties up the package, well he actually kinda sends it out into space - expanding everything in echo. NYC Peech Boys-esque delay. The result is a mind-blowing, psychedelic, almost ambient, Larry Levan-like, Paradise Garage dub. Where fragments of song fly at you from four corners. Trippily pan from left to right. The horn blasts now paying tribute to King Tubby`s Hi-Fi. François Kevorkian going bang! All carefully mastered with love from the original master tapes by Sam Berdah at The Wall studios.Full printed sleeve - black 12” vinyl.

Bad Guy Good Guy (Pacific Dream)

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Another rare gem from Record Shack gets its first officially licensed 12” release – the absolutely killer early ‘80s jazz funk tinged, boogie bomb from The Oceans – ‘Bad Guy, Good Guy’, fully remastered for maximum audio pleasure. With the release only ever being a whitelabel there was much confusion over the correct titling due to the stamp simply stating ‘Pacific Dream’, however the actual track titles are those housed on this release - ‘Bad Guy, Good Guy’ and the instrumental ‘Synth Good Guy’. Those original whitelabels command prices of up to £120 and it’s no surprise when you hear those infectious guitar riffs blended with buoyant synth flurries and sensuous vocal harmonies. For those that would rather leave the vocals at bay, the B side houses the instrumental mix in all its glory.A radiant release that still sparkles as bright as it did back in 1980 – an essential buy!

Come Back To Me

photo:
a propos:
Having been fans of Italian powerhouse Pino Presti’s music for a long time, it’s a special moment for the Spaziale team to now be releasing the master’s music. SPZ006 sees Stefano Ritteri offer up a club leaning version of a Presti classic, 'Come Back To Me', and new takes on two tracks uncovered from the Pino Presti vaults that have never before been released.Having reached out to Pino, who withdrew from the spotlight a number of years ago, the Spaziale team discovered he was sitting on some unheard, unreleased material. Spaziale’s Stefano Ritteri jumped at the opportunity to work with these recordings, resulting in Ritteri versions of both a Presti classic, ‘Come Back To Me’ spaced out into the galaxies, and two of these never-before-heard tracks recorded back in 1985. Using the original master tapes Ritteri weaves in subtle synth lines, added drum machine hits and tape echo delays to the arrangements providing punchy Balearic takes on these hidden treasures.
