The Sam Records Anthology

photo:
a propos:
Sources is a brand new series which will examine the output of a number of extremely influential independent U.S. labels throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In an age where corporate anonymity reigns supreme and music is being treated like aural wallpaper, the Sources series will go back to a time when record labels really meant something via their A&R policies, their ground-breaking releases, their everyday modus-operandi and their general philosophies. What made these operations unique? How did they manage to compete with the major companies? How did they protect their artist rosters? What sort of people ran these operations and how did they manage to survive in the cut-throat music business? The fourth package in the Sources series covers one of the most loved New York independent record labels ever, the iconic Sam Records. Formed by industry veteran Sam Weiss in 1975, the label launched with a the killer atmospheric funk anthem “Woman Of The Ghetto” by Doris Duke before heading into Disco territory with several hugely successful albums from John Davis & The Monster Orchestra before hitting big internationally with a brace of Disco smashes from Gary’s Gang including their most successful single “Keep On Dancing”. By the beginning of the 1980s Sam managed to deftly circumnavigate the Disco backlash and re-invent themselves as a bona-fide 80s Dance label immediately scoring with Rhyze’s “Just How Sweet Is Your Love”, Convertion’s “Let’s Do It”, Scandal’s “Just Let Me Dance”, K.I.D.’s “Don’t Stop” and Mike & Brenda Sutton’s “We’ll Make It” among others. This proved to be a fortuitous direction and by the end of 1982 Sam had scored high-profile successes with Vicky ‘D’’s “This Beat Is Mine”, Komiko’s “Feel Alright”, The Evasion’s “Wikka Wrap”, K.I.D.’s “Hupendi Muziki Wangu?! (You Don’t Like My Music)” and the sumptuous “Dreaming” by Greg Henderson. Sam’s impressive dance hit tally continued into 1983 with further successes like Steve Shelto’s pumping “Don’t Give Your Love Away” and Klassique’s “Somebody’s Loving You” before the label wound down for much of the next decade. Over the ensuing 30+ years Sam’s 70s and 80s releases have seldom been off DJs turntables whether via the Disco, Rare- Groove and Electro scenes or by the almost relentless re-edits that appear of Sam’s main output throughout this period. ‘Sources: The Sam Records Anthology’ continues the run of comprehensive anthologies of the most important labels in the evolution of Dance music.

The Soviet Tape

photo:
a propos:
The Soviet Tape is a new collaboration between Fulgeance & DJ Scientist. Their debut single 'Moscow Nightlife' is the perfect introduction to their sound: heavy instrumental hip hop culled exclusively from Scientist's un-rivalled collection of vintage Soviet-era records. Scientist, one of Germany's most prolific record collectors (check out his incredible 'Soviet Grooves' mix for Solid Steel) dug out a slew of samples from his archives, enlisting Fulgeance (MPC virtuoso and one half of Souleance) who transformed the source material into a truly unique and original album.Taking forgotten records from Russia to Moldavia, The Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia and beyond, the duo have interspersed the largely instrumental album with skits culled from 60s CIA documentaries as well as vocal cuts featuring Blu, Open Mike Eagle and DistantStarr. This all adds up to a release that is both a throwback to the uncertain times of the Cold War and a tribute to the great depth of music that the former Union was responsible for. Standout tracks include the aforementioned 'Moscow Nightlife', the synth-heavy menace of 'Vendetta', and DistantStarr's laid-back rhymes on 'You Know'. With high-concept artwork from Emile Sacre, taking it's cue from original Soviet records, the album is in turns jazzy, psychedelic and soulful, but with hip hop at it's core. A follow up is already in the works - keep 'em peeled comrades!

The Very Polish Cut Outs Sampler Vol.4

photo:
a propos:
Another bunch of successful edits on the unstoppable TVPC label. It's fourth sampler (and already a seventh record in label history) covers a wide array of exceptional gems, spanning from balearic pop, through electro disco, to slavic soul and disco funk. All tracks come from the late 70's and early 80's Poland and were carefully reworked by some of the finest young producers from the country, keen to pay homage to their musical roots. The A-Side is owned by the young and talented Karol Aleksander, who brings two of his most popular reworks to the table. A1, which clocks around 100 bpm, is an irresistible combination of sportive, yet modest groove with slick, sexy female vocals. A2 on the contrary is a melancholy-filled piece of Balearic house, based on old Polish pop track with addictive piano lines triggering the feeling of nostalgia for something that passed imperceptibly.Italo-fueled dancefloor madness opens the B-Side, curated by Kracow based combo of Unitrax & Radar groups. Four deejays, who usually are affiliated with deeper side of electronic spectrum, play around with rather unusual track lifted from Polish rock group debut album. B2 is handled by Polish house wunderkind Selvy, who closes the record with a touch of classy Indian summer vibes. The most beautiful moments of the short original version are extended with a great effect. All in all another must have in The Very Polish Cut-Outs catalogue!

Ashley Beedle Edits

photo:
a propos:
Ashley Beedle returns to the Kat Records stable, this time on their 45 offshoot....First up we have Flora Purim getting Ashley Beedle's extended edit treatment with the sublime Latin Jazz Funker Angels. Great vocal hooks, guitar licks and a jazz funk groove with added disco overtones to boot !...If the Mizell Brothers had been born in Rio then this is what it probably would've sounded like.On the flip we have Brian Protheroe's Pinball. A lost psychedelic pop classic which got to no.22 in the charts in 1974. A staunch Ashley Beedle fave with his tripped reworking doing exactly what i says on the tin... Dubbed, stretched, spaced out and arranged to perfection......
