Azerbaijani Gitara

photo:
a propos:
Rüstəm Quliyev was born in 1969 in the village of Kosalar, Nagorno Karabakh. At the age of seven he had already mastered the tar before moving on to play the saz. He first encountered the guitar whilst doing his military service for the USSR in Russia and quickly made a name for himself as a guitarist after returning to Azerbaijan. During the early 1990s, after years of intense fighting, he had to flee his home due to the conflict in Karabakh and settled in the capital city Baku where his guitar playing took on a new character. Here he played at weddings, made TV appearances and recorded numerous cassettes with small labels in the city.Rüstəm’s guitar playing not only drew on the rich traditional music of Azerbaijan but his thirst and passion for music also meant that he incorporated styles from across the globe into his repertoire- from Bollywood disco tunes and Afghan pop songs to Iranian street melodies and Spanish flamenco. He crafted a unique sound within an already idiosyncratic subculture of Azerbaijani electric guitar music. Sadly his career was brought to a sudden end in 2005 after a short battle with lung cancer. His music, however, lives on remaining popular throughout the country. This cassette of archival recordings, produced in collaboration with Rüstəm Quliyev’s family, marks the first international release of this guitar legend's music.Since the late 1960s the guitar has been adopted and transformed by musicians across the Caucasus. Inspired by traditional genres, such as the courtly mugham and the songs and tunes of ashiq bards, guitarists have developed a unique sound, new techniques and styles of playing. Gitara traces the development of this musical subculture, following the lives of guitarists from the suburbs of Azerbaijan's capital Baku to the rural villages of Borçalı (Kvemo Kartli) in Georgia.

Unit/Clash

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Tempo Dischi is an italian label created on a mission to discover and repress classics and rare italian gems of the italo disco, afro and cosmic scene. With the support from all the main players who has made that era magic, we work to put back on records stores shelves a piece of art that may have been lost but it’s still timeless. The fourth release is a double A side release from the japanese electronic music pioneer Hideki Matsutake. Composer, arranger and programmer he is certainly known as member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra with Ryuichi Sakamoto from 1978 to 1982. In 1981 he launched his own project Logic System, producing essential songs like ‘Unit’ and ‘Clash’ that are included in the seminal album ‘Logic’.‘The first half of the 70s was an era of practices and challenges for me’ comments Hideki ‘I started at the studio of the legendary electronic music pioneer Isao Tomita where i touched a synthesizer for the first time. I explored the Moog modular learning how to create sounds that nobody had heard. It was a stimulating period for music. Loads of the Japanese pop of this era was an active mix of different genres like jazz, fusion, electronic music, enka and more, and there were many experimental sounds. The experience with Yellow Magic Orchestra has been wonderful, but I've always had the desire to produce my music based on my own experiences. The first synthesizer I purchased was Moog IIIc and then an E-mu Modular System. The Roland MC-8 was also revolutionary in creating never-ending and precise rhythm patterns. I produced the first album ‘Logic’ together with my partner Ryo Kawakami. At the time I was working with him on different projects. Inspired by the principle of transformation, we were transported by thoughts, musical contexts and experimental elements that guided us to the production of this record’The B side is a special italo disco version of ‘Unit’ produced by the Italian studio team Mito, formed by Natale Bellotti, Italo Portesani and Stefano Secchi. The idea of this remaking came from friend and colleague Stefano Secchi. I think it was 1982’ recalls Italo Portesani ‘I introduced the project to Natale Bellotti who agreed to participate as executive producer. The studio band of Mito was born. The sound of Unit was already electronic and minimal but we thought to make it more danceable and in the mood with the italo disco and electro pop sound’

Aktshun ( Blue colored sleeve )

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
AKTSHUN is an offspring of the Mothership Connection, a sound that oozes out of the hidden basement of Studio 54, made for the roller skate rink of the "Main Jaune" in Paris. Mini tennis shorts, a tight tank top and pointy nipples, sexy hi-fiving butt cheeks, furious hairdos and heavily coloured eyelids hidden behind big sunglasses... It's the return of a frenetic Disco that gets down with Boogie Down Funk, a feverish Deep House caressing a wild P funk. It's the ambition of Marotti and Marrrtin, the duo behind this vast emergency plan to save the dancefloors, from Venice Beach to Shibuya. With this 4 tracks EP, the two friends will convince your grandparents to lock and pop, make your banker look like a drug dealer out of Miami Vice.Aktshun, duo comprised of Marotti (Dj, Deep House producer and owner of Meso records) and Marrrrtin (Dj, Hip Hop producer as well as Breakdance with the group Funky Bijou and manager of the Stereophonk label). The two friends are here reunited by their common love for House, Disco and Boogie Down Funk. This first vinyl contains 4 tracks which present a palette of influences, such as the track "Owned" with its jazzy sound presented by an acoustic bass line, B3 organ and the delicious flute of Antoine Laloux from The Selenites Band. On the second track, "Do the Jungle" we clearly feel the influence of Big Funk/P Funk with solid percussions, crazy synths and a nasty bassline... The B side "Somebody Say Yeah" brings us in a mix between Disco and Detroit House channelling the like of Moodyman or Wajeed... Finally, the smoothest track "U know (Baby)" features Rhodes chords, strings and a melodic bassline sending us straight back to New York House. Don't miss this one.
