Senegal 70 Sonic Gems & Previously Unreleased Recordings From The 70s

a propos:
4 years in the making, in partnership with Teranga beat the current leading label for Senegalese music, Analog Africa proudly offer an insight into the musical adventures that were taking place in the major Senegalese cities during the 60s and 70s. This compilation, reflects the unique fusions of Funk, Mbalax, Cuban Son and Mandigue guitar sounds that transformed Dakar into West Africa´s most vibrant city.It all started in 2009 when Adamantios Kafetzis travelled from Greece to Senegal with a brand new tape machine that he used to digitise the musical treasures he had discovered in the city of Thiés. These treasures took the form of reel tapes, and had been recorded by sound engineer Moussa Diallo, who had spent the previous four decades immortalising, onto magnetic tape, the bands that would perform in his club, the legendary Sangomar.300 Senegalese songs that nobody had ever heard before were discovered - five of them were selected for this compilation. Thanks to its history of outside influences, Senegal - the western point of Africa - had become a musical melting pot. Cuban and American sailors had brought Son Montuno from Cuba, Jazz from New Orleans and American soul tunes: sounds that were swiftly embraced and adopted by urban dance bands and intuitively merged with local music styles. One band in particular excelled at this fusion. 1960 marks the formation of Star Band de Dakar, a milestone that left an indelible imprint on Dakar's musical landscape. Indeed, the whole country was soon grooving to their intoxicating mixture of Afro Cuban rhythms and Wolof-language lyrics. The 1970s brought a new generation of stellar bands, Le Sahel, Orchestre Laye Thiam, Number One de Dakar, Orchestra Baobab, Dieuf Dieul de Thies and Xalam1 who fused traditional Senegalese percussion instruments such Sabra, Tama and Bougarabou with organs and keyboards, giving birth to new hybrids. Merging the folkloric and the experimental, these sounds, embraced by the youth, took centre stage and gave the previously dominant Cuban music a run for its money. With this burst of musical and artistic creativity, driven predominantly by the modern vision of President Senghor, Dakar began attracting international stars. The Jackson Five, James Brown, Tabou Combo (Haiti), Celia Cruz (Cuba) and an array of African stars like Tabu Ley Rochereau (Congo), Manu Dibango (Cameroon) and Bembeya Jazz (Guinée) joined in with the local scene, improvising jam sessions and bringing new flavours to a music scene that was always open to new inspirations and influences. Johnny Pacheco immortalised his passion for the city with a song called "Dakar, Punto Final".The comprehensive booklet that comes with the CD - 44 pages and with the Double LP - 12 pages LP size - is a precious document attesting to the decades of transformation that led to modern Senegalese music. Featuring biographies of music producers and a legendary record cover designer, as well as the life stories of all the groups represented here, the booklet also includes a fantastic selection of photos that have never seen before.

Ene Nyame A Mensuro (Henrik Schwarz Mixes)

photo:
a propos:
A rare original from 1978, Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas’ ‘Ene Nyame ‘A’ Mensuro’ is a yearning hidden classic of Ghanaian highlife / Afrobeat. Created originally as a DJ tool for his sets, Henrik Schwarz’ remix transforms the track into a late night dancefloor gem, adding a liquid bassline, pulsing 4/4 beats and dub sections to devastating effect. One of Schwarz’ finest remixes of recent years.

Celestial Strut

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Nearly two years after his debut album, Bosq Y Orquestra De Madera, burst onto the scene with its varied rhythms and moods, Bosq is unleashing another batch of music for the dancefloor. His new album Celestial Strut is extending summer well past the autumnal equinox. Not content to produce one style of music, Bosq takes you throughdisco ("Bad For Me". "Celestial Strut"), Latin rhythms ("Ella","Cumbia En Bahia"), and Afrobeat ("Bounce And Pull Up", "Take Over", "Pay The Price") with ease. Thinking of each album like a DJ set, he's always determined to inject many flavors but still keep a cohesive sound.Helping to craft the album, collaborators such as Nicole Willis,Jesus Pagan Y Conjunto Barrio, and Kaleta chipped in with lyric writing, vocal duties, and riveting soundscapes. Recalls Bosq,"Jesus and the Conjunto Barrio helped me to re-record all my parts into live ones which gives it a greater authenticity and better musicianship. I then took those parts to rework and modernize them." Bosq even co-wrote lyrics, a first for him, with his girlfriend on "Found Your Love." To add even more flair to the album,Caserta, someone Bosq greatly admires for being able to bring so much sonic depth, mixed several tracks on Celestial Strut.Having already received extensive coverage through outlets like WaxPoetics, OkayAfrica, Remezcla, and Sound Color Vibration as well as DJing around the country at nightclubs and even Boston's Museum Of Fine Arts, he's traveled extensively to locales such as South America and Puerto Rico since his last album to find new inspiration and perspective."Everything influences you consciously or subconsciously. So this album definitely has a sense of my travels and spending time in other cultures, whether on the road or with my girl and her family. All that Latin culture immersion has opened up my cold Northeast heart a lot!" he openly expresses. Celestial Strut is a confident record based on musical and lifeexperience that finds Bosq less constrained and focusing more on musical textures than genre conformity. Although he contends that there is so much more musically that he wants to learn, his love for creation and the learning process continues to push him to produce some of the most exciting dance and internationally-flavored wax dishes this decade.

Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds

photo:
a propos:
Here's something of a treat for disco diggers: an essential collection of little-known, hard-to-find and downright essential Brazilian disco and boogie. Put together by Brazilian digger Junior Santos, Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds is full of must-have material, from the familiar bounce and punchy horns of the Teena Marie-ish "Moral Tem Hora" from Cristina Camargo, to the sweet shuffle and carnival-friendly swing of Carlos Dafe's "Escorpiao". With quality material throughout picking highlights is tough, though we're particularly fans of the jazz guitar-laden boogie of Famks' "Labrinto" and Sandra De Sa's thrilling "Negra Flor".

Kouté Jazz

photo:
a propos:

Spies Are Watching Me

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Pursuing their explorations in the vast corridors of international Funk and Disco music, Favorite Recordings and Bruno « Patchworks » Hovart present us Voilaaa. With this first single composed of 2 tracks that clearly reveal the Afro-Disco inspiration of this new experience, Favorite also expands its new series of Disco 12inch singles recently launched with several fine reissues, but this time with one of its special homemade production recipe.Under the imprint of the label and after their long years of collaboration in the achievement of projects such as The Dynamics, Mr President, Mr Day, Patchworks Galactic Project, or Taggy Matcher, the insatiable French producer therefore returns to his first love and specialty, Disco music, staring this time at the African and Caribbean influences.Indeed, as everywhere in the 70s and 80s, Funk and Disco movements were extremely influential in these regions, as it’s been very well highlighted by some specialized labels for years with multiple reissues. France and its African and Caribbean communities, was no exception and was also nurturing many productions of the genre. In most cases, the combination of the festive, yet sometime futile nature of Disco, and the instinctive, deep, sometimes rough nature of African music, sounds like a perfect balance.Aiming to find back this energy and specific sound, Patchworks quickly began producing a few tracks; Using his unique and ruling beats and bass lines as foundations, this time he dresses all with guitars, keyboards and brass distorted with vintage and DIY effects pedals and boxes. A field game dustier and less flamboyant than the traditional and flashy Disco’ codes, but perfectly suited for Patchworks, who seems at the top of his game and to have fun like crazy facing this new challenge. With a very dynamic music scene around him in Lyon, where there is no shortage of artists with African origins, he decided to surround himself with singers from the region, even if it means to accompany them on unusual musical paths. A more than successful bet with a result surprising of authenticity, as it’s unveiled by these first two titles alongside Sir John and Pat Kalla, both from a musical background as rich than different. With an album planned for the end of the year, that promises to be as explosive and magnetic, Patchworks and Favorite Recordings make a strike again and confirm them a little more if needed, as the true warrant of the modern dancefloors’ loyalty, to the spirit of their mythical ancestors … Voilaaa tout (Thaaat’s all)!!
