Cantana

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Following on from their standout debut release, Viaggio return with another collection of global grooves, formulated by co-captain of Viaggio Recordings, Musta. Nestled alongside Musta’s productions, Disco Halal affiliate and man of the moment, Kincaid takes to remixing the mind bending ‘Cantana’.The A side is an invite into the inner circle of the tribe, with melodic messenger Musta leading the dance. Rome born, Sardinia based, he channels the sounds, sights and feelings of his time spent living in South America into the tribalistic ‘Cantana’. Hypnotically rhythmic, drawing on local samples and entrancing, percussive loops, Musta weaves organic, analog synths and beating kicks to form its basis. The energy conjured is animalistic, moving bodies with a purpose drawn from deep within. Enter the spiritual vocal - as infectious as they get, it’ll have dancers imitating the chants without them even knowing what they’re doing.Who better to remix this far-flung treasure than rising star, Kincaid. Taking ‘Cantana’ and twisting it into a tripped out roller, that transplants Musta’s exotic soundscapes into a distant cosmos. Surging synthesis, tectonic echoes and wobbly, otherworldly tinges pop and crackle throughout. It’s a grittier, glitchier affair with a more electronic, distorted feel, yet it’s roots still remain in that warm, earthy aesthetic with its rich, tactile tones.Take to the flip side and Musta swaps the baked earth, for the sandy tropical disco sounds of ‘Mangiamo’ - further bringing that South American flavour to the fore. Strutting guitar riffs blend with fiery bongos, whilst a punchy bass strides over the top. It’s uplifting, alluring and drenched in the kind of zesty sax lines that will bring a smile to the face of any frown it comes up against.

The boys from Munich are back on RNT with a 4-tracker of serious flavor! 'Express Lane' launches the 12” on the disco highway for a wild ride of cheeky vocals, horn stabs, and vocoded synths, then veers south for some North-African New Wave with 'Libyan Sun'.The B side kicks off with the Afro-disco monster 'Don’t Oho', already a staple in RNT sets and then finishes with the minimalist electro-soul bounce of 'Emergency Loop'. Sure-shots, the lot of 'em!

Tropical Disco Edits Vol Seven

photo:
a propos:
Tropical Disco plucks out a spellbinding salvo of heaters for Tropical Disco Volume. 7, dished out on suitably heavy wax.Moodeena’s “The Horns” boldly kicks off the record, effortlessly weaving together elements of funk, soul and afro, influenced by a myriad of far-reaching regions. The earworm of a bassline subtly leads the piece, morphing, dipping and then reassembling as the brass resurfaces, creating a tender, palpable sound palette. On the flip “What Da Funk”s playful track title doesn’t reflect its cultivated build, and no doubt lethal functionality on a dancefloor.Titillating strings are the driving force for Tropical Disco newcomer Sammy Deuce’s input, bringing a burning, high-energy ode to golden-era disco with “Smack My Strings Up”. Hot on the heels of a series of well received releases on labels such as Glasgow Underground, Club Session and Big Love, Sammy deuce offers up a rare guest track on the label that pairs perfectly with a recipe Sartorial and Moodena have refined so successfully.Sartorial closes the EP with “Little Love”, a carefully plotted symphony and formidable sign off for the release. Hustling a creamy bass and slowly swooning vocal, this audio aphrodisiac will have dancers headed straight to the bedroom…Tropical Disco’s back-catalogue of quality nu-disco obscurities is building thick and fast, and the latest package is a diamond in a gleaming gold mine.

Oooh, Baby

auteur:

a propos:
First release of 2019 for Ice City and this one needs no special introduction. One of the ultimate "crossover" soul records - ever. Mid 70s Chicago masterpiece Pamoja written and produced by Keith Stevenson."Oooh, Baby" is an uptempo soul groover designated to light up any proper dancefloor. Due to its scarcity and overall demand, it has become a treasure hunt nightmare for cratediggers worldwide. Finally, the official reissue is here! And if that's not enough, flip the 45 over and go deep on the ballad "Only the Lonely Know", with the throbbing, shrill falsetto vocals from Keith himself.

Afro Funk & Disco Gems Volume Nine

photo:
a propos:
Volume 9 of Mukatsuku Afro series kicks off with 'M'Ongele M'Am' from Cameroon artist Eko Roosevelt Louis taken from his early 1980's self-titled album and licenced for this 45 from Nubiphone & Africa Seven. The track was one of the highlights of the 2017 Pop Makossa compilation for Analagog Africa and it's the first time ever on a single in its own right.Driving brass funk fuelled afro disco does not really get much better than this. On the flipside Georges Ouedraogo from Burkina Faso gives us us the dance floor bomb ''Deni'' taken from his 1978 long player ''Gnanfou Gnanfou'' also licenced from Africa Seven and also the first time ever on a single. Punchy brass offset by those hipnotic vocals and funky wah-wah guitar has a deserved place on the flip. Strictly no repress. Essential 45 for the dancefloor !

Colombia 26a

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Widely revered French DJ and producer, Thomas Arroyo aka Laroye has released music exploring a variety of different genres from broken beat on the early days of MCDE and Faces Records, through to funk and boogie with QWESTLIFE on Midnight Riot, Black Riot and ISM Records and beyond. His creativity extends to a number of side projects, like Soul Rüma (with Andre Espeut) and experimental modular jams and atmospheric blues with his own project The Tom Laroye Experiment. His next release on Tiff's Joints has already received the seal of approval from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Alexander Nut, Volcov and more. The A1, 'Colombia 26a', sets pace for the release with heavy Afro-Latin percussion, a thick bassline and the type of dexterous musicality the label is steadily becoming known for. 'The Trickster' is built around an infectiously squelchy keys part, bolstered by a bouncing bassline, the track culminates in a soaring lead melody and ridiculous synth solo. 'Espiritú' is more downtempo and spacey. Kicking off with a relentlessly driving and hypnotic polyrhythm, and complete with an uplifting choral arrangement, seriously trippy lapsteel guitar (?!) and a mysterious guiding voice.

Negotiate

auteur:

South Londons Henry Wu makes his HoTep debut with the Negotiate Ep, his most comprehensive release to date.Spanning five cuts the Ep journeys through loose soulful grooves, dusty fingered beats and bumpy analog house. Bringing that redlight, basementality throughout, title track 'Just Negotiate' featuring Simeon Jones on vocals moves above street level, adding bitter sweet dancefloor/radio vibes to proceedings. On the whole.... Some abstract jazz type sh*t!

In Togetherness

photo:
a propos:
Judy Pollak's late 70s LP is extremely rare and charming peace of music. Not just a Soul and Funk LP, sprinklings of folkiness in Judy's vocal make this a fairly unique and fantastic listen, no wonder it can hit $1000 when it comes up for sale. Recorded in 1977 at PAC 3 Studio, Dearborn, Michigan, where bands such as Al Hudson, Floaters, C.J. & Co and many more recorded. Judy used to hang out on the music scene and was introduced to the band via a mutual friend and Sax player Charlie Gabriel. 33 1/3 who were from Detroit got together with Judy who was living Living between Southfield, Michigan and North Carolina at the time and this LP is the result. Enjoy.

The Paralian

photo:
a propos:
Andrew Wasylyk is the alias of Scottish writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Mitchell. In 2018, Andrew was extended a residency invite from arts centre and historic house, Hospitalfield, Arbroath, Scotland to create new music for their restored, 19th century, Erard Grecian harp.During Wasylyk's five-month sojourn he created melodies and progressions echoing the building's unique relationship with the looming North Sea horizon. Using not only the harp, but the house's original grand piano, Andrew explored the Angus landscape and beyond, gathering field recordings on trips to neighbouring Seaton Cliffs and Bell Rock Lighthouse (the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse).Winter slipped into spring, and harp-led compositions gave way to an ambitious third, full-length album, exploring a range of themes utilising a broad palette of instrumentation, including flugelhorn, euphonium, oboe, string trio, vintage synthesisers, drones and upright piano. From the wandering, Bob James-esque, Fender Rhodes and shimmering strings in the study of coastal light, "(Welter) In The Haar", to the plaintive brass and farewell transmission blowing through, "Adrift Below A Constellation", punctuated by the fragility of Wasylyk's sole lead vocal of this collection - "The Paralian" (a dweller by the sea), is a conclusion embued with blue and golden melodies that land in a territory akin to experimentalists such as Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno. Through which, Wasylyk weaves the listener along a Modern-classical, Ambient and Jazz dream of Scotland's east coast.Athens Of The North team were stunned by the luminous beauty and creativity at play in this work. Falling between genres and time, it stands next to 60s British Jazz, effortlessly blending notes of Library and soundtracks with dashes of British Folk.
