Angeli Bianchi Angeli Neri

photo:
a propos:
"Angeli bianchi... angeli neri" is one of the best results of the collaboration between Piero Umiliani and director Luigi Scattini. Filmed in Brazil, "Angeli bianchi... angeli neri" (also known as "Witchcraft 70") is one of Scattini's most popular mondo films. However in an exagerated way, as was common at the time, the aim of the movie was to document the world of black magic, devil worshipping and pagan rituals. Through the years it has reached the status of "cult movie" along with "Mondo cane" ("A Dog's World") and "Africa addio".Without any doubt, some of its success is to be attributed to one of the most beautiful soundtracks composed by Umiliani. The soundtrack was recorded in part in Brazil, with local musicians and instruments, and in part in Rome, with the collaboration of the talents of Edda Dell'Orso, Nora Orlandi and Alessandro Alessandroni and his Cantori Moderni. The music reflects samba and bossa nova influences and emphasizes the composer's ability in orchestrating the whole in a new and personal style. A special mention must go to the incredibile psychedelic "Streghe a convegno", which seems to have stemmed from a Tropicalist masterpiece of the time, to "La foresta incantata" in which Orlandi gives a superb vocal interpretation, to the percussive "Macumba" (where it is Dell'Orso's turn) and last to "Toccata e samba" which is a happy and daring mix between Bach and samba. As Scattini himself states in an interview: "I firmly believe that this is one of the most beautiful soundtracks composed by Piero. It is a mix of bossa, samba and ambient music, not aimed at underlying or accompanying the scenes, at times crude and violent, but at arising in the spectator the very same emotions I had experienced while directing". It will be the same for you also ...

K Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas

photo:
a propos:
The second of two self-titles albums released during Ghana's music explosion of the 1970's, K. Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas is a celebratory and powerful follow up to the album that made them famous. Backed by the mighty Vis A Vis band (here renamed the "Cubano Fiestas") Alhaji K. Frimpong and company create a sinous, infectious, funky sound that once heard can't be forgotten. This fusion of James Brown and Fela inspired rhythms with more traditional Ghanaian Highlife, depsite having been created nearly 35 years ago, still sounds stunningly fresh today. K.Frimpong songs have been licensed for compilations on Soundway, Strut and Analog Africa / limited edition vinyl comes with free-mp3-download-coupon!

Listen to them now, so you can say you have heard the best - The Best of Hilton Felton." Sincerely, D. Project Elo

photo:
a propos:
Breathtaking Contemporary Spiritual Jazz from South Africa ... When Tumi Mogorosi composed this suite for jazz musicians and opera vocalists he had never heard the previous successful attempts by Donald Byrd, Max Roach or Mary Lou Williams to combine these seemingly 'unfriendly'aesthetics. Tumi, born in 1987 and already an accomplished drummer on the Jo'Burg scene, was at the time studying music at the Tshwane University of Pretoria where he became close friends with opera singers working on the same campus. So unlike some of his US peers Tumi's beliefs are not 'religious'.Surprisingly, Tumi's suite wasn't influenced by these great elders' masterpieces, but anyone who listens to this album will agree that the suite encaptures the soaring spirituality that made these experiments of the '60s the beloved classics that they are today. Tumi does not belong to any religious group. This album is neither a jazz mass like Mary Lou William's Black Christ of the Andes, nor a compilation of devotional pieces like Donald Byrd's Christo Redentor. Project Elo stands for Project Elohim, the angelic entities of the spiritual scriptures which are in the drummer's philosophy, a symbol for accomplished human beings. The spirituality the album conveys is attuned to a 21st century syncretic, non dogmatic vision infused with esotericism. Recorded live with no overdubs in two days by a group of friends, this album captures a moment of Eternity and will defy any idea you may have of what South African jazz is. Tumi's music transcends labels and styles. When composing or playing he is only concerned with being true to the primodial source of life, which cannot be confined to any genre.

The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul

photo:
a propos:
Greg Caz and Deano Sounds have teamed up once again to bring you another fine package of vintage Brazilian music. This one stretches across the scope of funk, soul, and psychedelic music from Brazil. Some highlights include: the extremely rare and funky “Labirinto” by 2001 & Beto, the blistering psychedelic funk of Antônio Carlos & Jocafi’s “Quem Vem Lá,” the essential rare groove track “Bananeira” by Emilio Santiago, Osmar Milito E Quarteto Forma’s rare “América Latina” sampled by Madlib, Tom Zé’s unstoppable riff on “Jimmy, Renda-Se,” and many others. Here are some words on the project from co-compiler and Brazilian music aficionado, Greg Caz:“Without necessarily having a central theme other than funky nuggets from the first half of the 70s, we believe this compilation displays its own particular sense of logic, and that these songs ultimately all sound fantastic together. Regardless of one’s familiarity, or lack thereof, with artists like Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, Os Incríveis, Toni Tornado or Celia, the material on these 45s speaks its own truth and justifies their inclusion here. Many of these were originally available as singles, while others were taken from albums, but all are guaranteed to find their way into many DJ boxes and playlists.” The 45 box set version comes in a durable glossy case with 7 x 45s, a poster containing the original artwork for the album, a booklet filled with imagery from the original artists and releases and liner notes by Greg Caz, the “Mad Scientist of Brazilian Beats.”

Happiness In Every Style

photo:
a propos:
This Autumn, Nicole Willis rolls out with her third album made together with The Soul Investigators "Happiness In Every Style". It is bound to send shivers through backs all around the world. As the name suggests, the new album will offer variety and tilt towards a more positive note after the murky "Tortured Soul" from two years back. This means Nicole and the boys have made things a bit more soothing for the listener, offering upbeat modern soul and even embrace more sophisticated melodies alongside their highly evolved raw funk sound. To get a taste of this, one only has to put on "Let's Communicate" or "One In a Million" to have their hands clapping and toes tapping in no time, or respectively, witness the dance floor explode. From minor key ballads such as "Thief In The Night" to the unapologetically poppy "Angel", the new album is bound to bring to the hearts of humans in every shade and style.Whether you know Nicole Willis from before or not does not hold any weight here. After hearing her with The Soul Investigators on this new album, you will know they are for real, and out to offer you everything you need to fill up your soul supply. With Nicole's insightful lyrics and the band's hard-hitting music you are in good care.LP comes with tip-on old school style cover and MP3 download card !
