Nothing New

photo:
a propos:
LP+DVDOriginally released as a Record Store Day exclusive (and often fetching L50 a pop), Gil Scott Heron recorded these raw, stripped-back versions from his classics during the years he wrote I'm New Here. There's a delicate, fragile nature to his voice that's usually backed up with much broader, fuller instrumentation. Bringing his stories and emotions to the fore, it's one of the most touching documents he's ever done. Complete with a DVD documentary and unseen footage, this is an incredible insight into one of soul's most pained and complex characters.

Open Labs

photo:
a propos:
Indonesian native, Midnight Runners, transmits 8 songs from the city of Bandung, where the industrialized creative community and the island's tropical rainforest meet. Check! Known in circles for disco/funk sample based music, Midnight Runners has transformed the studio with the vintage analog gear that he used to sample, giving the multi-instrumentalist the ability to arrange and preform in the ways of his teachers on record. Open labs is dripping wet with deep grooves built on foundations of live drums and drum machines twisted together to light the fuse on explosive synth arrangements and thick baselines. For dance floors and lifestyles alike, each song is masterfully crafted with a sensibility that uniquely molds industry and nature harmoniously. Interweaving synth and slap bass lines with hard sultry melodics, carrying listeners through the rubble of city life to the mist of the tropics, on a path to where the vantage point enjoys both.

Joia Rara Volume 1

photo:
a propos:
The title says it all: Joia rara...Rare jewels. The well-established and authoritative knowledge and enthusiasm of Mojoknights blog comes correct on this collection of boogie, funk and soul rarities from the Brazilian motherland. From the staccato narrative and slinky boogie guitars of Jackson Goes "Variacoes" to the Parliament-style chants, heavy percussion and Chic/Sugar Hill references of Bons Tempos "Sao Paulo" to the velvet lounge-lashings of Brasil Show's piano-happy "Lagrimas", the whole collection sparkles with myriad sunny-side soul grooves and Latin heat that has largely been unavailable until now. Universal.

The Dancers At The Edge Of Time

photo:
a propos:
This major new release from the Greg Foat Group sees celebrated jazz quintet making the most of the acoustics of an ancient church, accompanied by a full ensemble of supporting musicians. The fourth album from the celebrated jazz combo will further delight Foat fans who have been consistently enthralled by the taste and finesse with which they execute their beguiling arrangements and instrumentation.Last year, during the long, hot summer of 2014, a couple of tons of vintage studio gear were bundled into an ancient church on the charming and picturesque village of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. There the centuries-old church organ was the centerpiece and the Group was accompanied a string quartet and woodwinds to create a musical style like no other. The resulting hauntingly sublime sounds need not only fill vaulted chapel ceilings, but our hearts and ears as well.Recorded across three of the hottest days in summer, direct onto 1" tape and with all the rich, live analogue sound and the hallowed magnificence that church acoustics can bring, The Dancers at the End of Time features the classic Foat group with guesting local musicians and friends, and celebrates the summertime and beach ambience of living on the island.Recorded on vintage analogue equipment in an ancient church on the Isle of WightOnly 1000 vinyl LPs available with printed innerOnly on Jazzman - all because WE DIG DEEPER!

Rapso Takeover

photo:
a propos:
Originally released in 1986, Brother Resistance's Rapso Take Over blends calypso, reggae, disco, funk and poetry to create the artist’s signature Rapso sound. TIP!A progressive form of poetry from Trinidad and Tobago, Rapso emerged as a means by which to articulate the daily suffering symptomatic of the social unrest afflicting the nation throughout the 1970s and 80s. Brother Resistance played a significant role in the Rapso movement, deploying his music to spread messages of hope and liberation. The authorities took Brother Resistance’s rising status seriously, destroying what they could of his studios and in the process leaving only a small amount of his music in circulation. Now for the first time we can hear Brother Resistance’s finest work remastered and repressed. The music and the message live on through Rapso Take Over’s stripped back rhythms infused with steel and strings, all carried by the voice of resistance.

Just in time for summer! Some serious heat from the darkest corners of the TK Disco vaults, dug up, re-mastered and brought back to life for your listening and dancing pleasure! To say Trama's sole LP is a rarity is an understatement! Released on TK offshoot CAT Records in 1977 it's swaggering street-funk attitude, tight ass rhythm section, blistering arrangements and stellar vocal performances from a young Donna Allen has left beat digging, Soul, Boogie and Disco freaks hot under the collar for over 3 decades!Often selling on-line for tidy sums (£250 +) this LP is a true gem, now is your chance to own a %100 legit, TK Disco sanctioned, vinyl copy of this killer Soul LP. Re-issued just the way it originally came out in 1977, no tricks. Essential!

Apiafo

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Apiafo is a 12 track album, entirely recorded, mixed and mastered from old analog tapes, and played with vintage instruments, recalling the sound of bands like Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou or El Rego!Peter Solo invited his uncle, Roger Damawuzan, famous pioneer of the 70’s soul scene in Togo, to sing on “Pas Contente” & “Wrong Road“. The result of their collaboration is without a doubt two amazing future dancefloor classics! The idea of integrating these haunting lines, sung in honor of the Divinities, to an energetic 70's Afro-funk style, was, in Peter Solo's mind, an obvious extension of the analogy he found between the voodoo tradition and trance inducers such as Soul, Funk, as well as the Rhythm ‘N Blues of James Brown or Otis Redding.

Celebration Of Jay

photo:
a propos:
Japanese hip-hop LP dedicated to J Dilla !“I can’t remember the first track I listened to, but I started to become aware of his presence with “Slum village / Fantastic Vol. 2”.He’s been producing classics even before this album, and I’ve listened to numerous tracks including the unreleased ones. But for me, Jay Dee/ J Dilla’s presence is packed into “Slum village / Fantastic Vol.2” and “Welcome 2 Detroit”. I have never been influenced so much by music in my life, and probably never will be. Until then, I strived to create music without being influenced by anyone, but by recognizing him and becoming a captive of his worldview, there was no way to escape his influence. His extremely tight drums were made without relying on quantization, and his use of sine waves for bass and layering filtered samples was incredible. He had a distinctive utilization of space, and seemingly rough but delicate style. There’s no doubt that he laid the foundations for my current style. I have created tracks for people in the past, but I have never dedicated a whole album for anyone. Even after his passing I greatly respect him as a mentor, and I have longed to dedicate an album for him in order to reflect on my present self. The intension of this album is not to imitate, but to present myself while reflecting on how his influence has helped me to find my own style. This is a dedication of my style to him, which would not have been possible without his influence. I will continue to respect him.

Tryin To Survive

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Limited! Repress of this Surinamese cult funk album! With an estimated 500.000 inhabitants, Surinam has always had a lively music scene. Although the country is little known internationally, it has a very strong influence on the Netherlands, where many Surinamese people live. Music from Surinam is mainly known for its kaseko (which evolved out of the traditional kawina music) and soul music, but the Surinamese have also been active in other genres such as pop, funk & jazz.Between 1976 and 1983, Surinam had a lively soul scene, with the output varying from eccentric soul tracks to more uptempo disco and boogie cross-overs. Nowadays, these tracks are becoming increasingly rare and hard to find. Kindred Spirits' compilation “Surinam! Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dancefloor ’76 – ‘83” gave a proper introduction to these hidden gems and included the tune "Soul With Milk", from Sumy’s “Tryin To Survive” LP. Rush Hour now continues its uncovering mission by making this 80s boogie and disco-funk album available again to a wider audience. "Tryin To Survive" is truly one of a kind... Expect a-typical pounding rhythms, striking guitars, and stabbing keyboards and synths. After "Trying To Survive", the digging efforts continue... More Surinamese funk tracks will hit the surface, as we dig deeper in the vaults. Another "Surinam!" compilation is currently in the making, and will be released somewhere in 2015...
