Anthology: Messages (Black Vinyl)

a propos:
Gil Scott-Heron is one of the most influential black music artists of his generation. Like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield his music transgresses all music boundaries, and he is as heralded in rock as in soul and jazz circles. Along with his musical partner Brian Jackson, Gil wrote and recorded some of the most memorable and poignant songs of the 70s. Their songs have taken on a myriad of topics - "The Bottle" focussed on alchoholism, "We Almost Lost Detroit", "Shut 'Em Down" and "Winter In America" on nuclear power and the environment, "Johannesburg" on apartheid, "Angel Dust" on drug abuse - many of which are still totally relevent today. This album puts together 15 of the best and most in demand of their recordings from 1973 to 1980, and is the first collection covering that period for 15 years.

a propos:
For the first time on 12” single, two Curtis Mayfield songs given the Patti Jo treatment and mixed by Tom Moulton. While originally from the early 1970s, these versions were previously only available on 7” originally from the Scepter/Wand labels. Patti came from Florida and sang in her own group P.J. Smith & Co before releasing just four songs across two singles as a solo artist. Released in brand new Soul Brother 12” range bag.

a propos:
Two great Tom Moulton Mixes back to back!SOUTH SHORE COMMISSION were a self contacted soul/funk band from Chicago. They released their one self-titled, Billboard Dance Chart No.1 album in 1975 on Wand Records from which comes the Bunny Sigler composed/produced track “Free Man” featuring Instant Funk. It was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. This Tom Moulton mix on “Free Man” was an original feature of the album and is considered one of the first proto-house recordsULTRA HIGH FREQUENCY: More Philly splendor here from 1973 with “We’re On The Right Track” co-written and co-produced by Norman Harris. Mixed by Tom Moulton. Never previously released before on 12” single.

Give Me Your Love/Try It, You'll Like It

photo:
a propos:
Soul Brother Records are delighted to present the first legal reissue of the Rare Groove classic ‘Give Me Your Love’ by The Sisters Love on a 45. Originally released as a B side on Motown’s Mowest label in 1973, this track has been in demand and played on various club scenes since the early 80’s and has maintained its popularity. Original copies now sell for £150 to £200 if you are lucky enough to find a clean copy. This is a fantastic slice of danceable Soul produced by Gloria Jones and Paul Riser. It was written by Curtis Mayfield whose own version appeared on the Superfly soundtrack. The track was sampled by Queen Latifah, Ruth Joy, Stereo MC’s and Robbie Williams and Kyle Minogue in their song ‘Kids’, amongst others. On the flip side is their great version of Willie Hutch’s song ‘Try It You Like it’. This is likely to be one of the most popular in Soul Brothers series of classic 45’s.

See The Light

auteur:

Keyboardist Eddie Russ hailed from Pittsburg and played with many of the greats including Sarah Vaughn, Benny Golson, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. Eddie is somewhat of an enigma, but he has always been held in high regard in the UK, and he finally was able to perform here in London at the Jazz café in the early 90's a few years before his untimely demise. His debut album ‘Fresh Out’ was recorded for the Jazz Masters label and includes the jazz dance classic ‘The Lope Song’, he also contributed heavily to Sonny Stitt’s ‘Tornado’ album on that label. His band The Mixed Bag also made an album for the Detroit Tribe label. In 1976 he signed to John Richbourg’s Sound Stage 7 label and made two great jazz funk albums which were released on the Nashville’s Monument label and like his debut were produced by Bob Crawford. From this first album ‘See The Light’ the title track is a great take on the Earth Wind And Fire song, ‘Poko Nose’ is a great funky groove oriented track, but it is the magical ‘Zaius’ that has become an all time jazz funk classic, a track that has maintained its popularity over the past 40 years. The Monument albums include some great musicians including Marcus Belgrave and Larry Nozero, and on the “Take A Look At Yourself” album Motown’s Eddie Willis, a very young Kenny Garrett and the funk group Quazar.

She also does a great job of the Emotions ‘Don’t Ask My Neighbours’, and Renee Coles adds her vocals to the infectious rare groove version of Quincy Jones ‘I Heard That’ .The Monument albums include some great musicians including on this album Motown’s Eddie Willis, a very young Kenny Garrett and the funk group Quazar.

Mad Cliff

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Madcliff recorded this, their only album in 1977. Singer, Songwriter, Drummer, Bassist and Keyboardist Chris Hills wrote all of the songs, two of them with Chico Waters with whom he had co written with on Herbie Mann's Embryo label in 1971.The album has a broad range of Soul, Funk and Disco tracks. It contains the original versions of two tracks that Chris would go on to record as a member of the Players Association later the same year. The early cuts of "I Like It" and "Goin' To The Disco" have a more raw approach than the better known and more polished versions. The killer cut is the funk bomb "You Can Make The Change".This track was made popular by Keb Darge at his legendary deep funk nights. "It Takes A Little More" was co written with Danny Weiss with whom Chris would work with as The Players Association and then as the group Feel in the early 80's. This album is one of the rarest that we have released in our classic albums series. Original Vinyl copies sell for around £200.
