DJ Format's Psych Out: A Collection Of International Funky Fuzz Laiden Gems

photo:
a propos:
DJ Format presents his new compilation Pysch Out.DJ Format's Psych Out is a compilation of records from around the world that Format WISHES he could play at clubs every weekend. Some of the tracks are hard to categorise...kind of psychedelic, kind of funky, kind of crazy...but most have unmistakable blend of distorted electric guitars, driving basslines and pounding drums. Maybe you didn't think it was possible for “Foxy Lady” to be played any harder...but 49th Blue Streak did it. “Hava Nagila” never really seemed likely to lend itself to a psychedelic reworking...but The Quests from Singapore thought differently. In Germany, The CT Four Plus did away with boring tradition and instead praised God with their electric guitars. Advertising executives in France thought it best to spread the word of their new chocolate bar by commissioning the Bana Pop Band to make a cool 7" flexi disc record. These are just a few examples of how the boundaries of music were being pushed in the late '60s & early '70s when most of these exciting recordings were made.In DJ Format's own words:The idea for this compilation came about because of my search for a rare psych/funk 7" that isn't even included here! My friend DJ Oneofakind played me the said record and I totally lost my mind. Some months later after a lot of asking around and searching online, a copy turned up on Discogs.com for a painful amount of money. I contacted the seller to ask a couple of questions and it turned out I was talking to Jake Holloway, BBE's in-house designer. I'd loosely known Jake for a few years through mutual friends so we quickly arranged a time to meet and take care of business. Jake told me he'd offered the 7" to a few other DJ/collector friends but they'd passed on it as it was 'too heavy' for them. This got us talking about my love for psych records with a funky slant and I explained my frustration at buying so many records that fit that description, that were 'too heavy' to play at my typical DJ gigs. Jake had the perfect solution: "why don't you do a compilation of funky, fuzzed-out psych stuff for BBE?''.

An Eye For An Eye

photo:
a propos:
Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official album reissue of An Eye For An Eye by Byrne & Barnes: A true WestCoast/AOR masterpiece, produced in legendary music city Muscle Shoals (Alabama) and originally only released on Japanese label Climax. An Eye For An Eye features amazing and sophisticated songs, and parades all the elements of the AOR style: a jazzy sometimes fusion approach, with modern soul and groove flavors. After Charles Maurice recently selected the song “Love You Out Of Your Mind” in the AOR Global Sounds Vol.2 compilation, it quickly felt obvious for Favorite Recordings to arrange a proper reissue of the full album, including for the first time the vinyl format. Fully restored and remastered with great attention to sound quality, An Eye For An Eye by Byrne & Barnes is presented in a deluxe vinyl version housed in a tip-on jacket, as CD and in Digital versions.

Dreamer Of Life

Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official album reissue of Dreamer of Life by Greg Yoder: A killer AOR private press LP infused with Folk, Jazz and Soul notes and maybe one of the best albums from the Hawaiian Scene in this style.Originally from San Francisco, Greg Yoder moved to Hawai'i in the early seventies and after achieving some local fame in the Waikiki area, recorded this one-off LP in 1976 at Audissey Sound studios, in Honolulu. The music is smooth and soothing, mixing xylophones, percussions, sweet guitars and brilliant orchestrations. In short, Dreamer of Life is full of hidden hits and faultless from the first note to the last.Following his various projects at Favorite Recordings, DJ and producer Charles Maurice recently unveiled this masterpiece by selecting the song “Things Were So Easy” on the AOR Global Sounds Vol.2 compilation. And after the label contacted Greg Yoder about it, the idea of reissuing this amazing album quickly became obvious. After its various compilations reissues over the past 2 years, Favorite Recordings is more than ever keen to enlighten rare-groove forgotten music and will quickly follow-up with great new full albums and compilations reissue projects in 2016.Fully restored and remastered with great attention to sound quality, Dreamer of Life by Greg Yoder is presented in a deluxe vinyl version, housed in a tip-on jacket, as CD and in Digital versions.

Coming From Reality

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Back in 1971, Coming From Reality was Rodriguez’s last gasp, the follow-up to Cold Fact and the final album he was allowed to record for the Sussex label. Unearthed, once again, by Light In The Attic Records, it’s another treat for fans new and old, designed – at the time – as Rodriguez’s vision of a perfect pop album. Check!Coming From Reality found Rodriguez decamping from Detroit to London’s Lansdowne Studios, where the album was recorded with some of the UK’s top talent including Chris Spedding (Sex Pistols, Dusty Springfield, Harry Nilsson) and producer Steve Rowland (The Pretty Things, PJ Proby and the man who discovered The Cure), who recalls Coming From Reality as his favourite ever recording project.Highlights include the super-poppy “To Whom It May Concern”, the “Rocky Raccoon”-inspired “A Most Disgusting Song” and period piece “Heikki’s Suburbia Bus Tour”. The CD reissue also includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded in Detroit in 1972 with Cold Fact collaborators Mike Theodore & Dennis Coffey, representing the last thing they ever did together.Meanwhile, the Rodriguez story keeps gathering pace. A Swedish documentary company are working on a feature length documentary about the enigmatic performer’s life and music, and Rodriguez is planning to bring his live show to the UK and Europe come Spring/Summer 2009, along with further North America touring.“It’s an extraordinary trip,” says Rodriguez of his new lease on life. “It feels like Picasso, Monet. All these exciting new thoughts coming at me. It’s global. I’m lucky to have this second chance. It’s very real and totally unexpected.”Sixto Rodriguez, then. Still coming from reality, and bigger than ever before.

On Retinae

photo:
a propos:
80s Japanese pop GOLD - both versions of 'On Retinae' on 12" for the first time. Talk about an end of night finisher..oooh eee.. full info: Music From Memory’s third 12” release features two versions of the track ‘On Retinae’ by the Japanese pop duo Dip In The Pool. With support from friend Yasuaki Shimizu (AKA Mariah) on clarinet, the track is pure end of the night pop perfection and something of a lost classic.Originally appearing on Dip In The Pool’s 1989 LP of the same name, ‘On Retinae’ was also pressed in Hong Kong as a 50 copies only promo 12” release, the existence of which remained unknown even to the band themselves until recently. True to that original promo release Music From Memory have chosen to present both the ‘West’ (English Version) and ‘East’ (Japanese Version) again in 12” format.Blending a unique sense of music and style, Dip In The Pool created a refined sense of dreamy minimal pop formed by the productions of Tatsjui Kimura and the ethereal, floating vocals of Miyako Koda. Something of a fashion icon and a much-photographed model in Japan, Miyako is also an actress and has appeared in a number of Japanese feature films.Since their debut LP on the UK’s Rough Trade label in 1985, the group gained something of a cult following and have continued to record and perfom live, with this 12” coming ahead of a much-deserved compilation of the groups work which is to be released by Warner Brothers digitally and on CD later this year.

Golden Round Circus/Couldn’t Fool Around No More

auteur:

UC005 is music for sideways times when down is up and up is down. Golden Round Circus and I Couldn't Fool Around No More are spiritual kin to Michael Wynn Band's Dark Night and Straight Shooter's Frame of Mind.Chugging, cosmic AOR by heads for heads. Golden Round Circus elevates the mind with hypnotic synth and I Couldn't Fool Around No More soars on open drum breaks, guitar solos and multitracked harmonies.Nobody knows what's really going down with the mysterious Viking known as The Keeper. Here's what we know: The Keeper is Swedish, has some previous work in Nemas Problemas on Fasaan Recordings, and an upcoming release on Passport to Paradise. While we've been sworn to reveal no more information, The Keeper is more than welcome to the Universal Cave family.Pressed on 7 Inch Heavyweight vinyl.

Cold Fact

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
It's one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. The album is Cold Fact, and what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a menial day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution.Rodriguez recorded Cold Fact - his debut album - in 1969, and released it in March 1970. It's crushingly good stuff, filled with tales of bad drugs, lost love, and itchy-footed songs about life in late '60s inner-city America. 'Gun sales are soaring/Housewives find life boring/Divorce the only answer/Smoking causes cancer,' says the Dylan-esque Establishment Blues. But the album sank without trace, thanks, in part, to some of Rodriguez's more idiosyncratic behavior, like performing at an industry showcase with his back to the audience throughout. When the follow-up, 1972's Coming From Reality, also sold poorly, Rodriguez called an end to his recording career. He'd never even played a proper gig. And he got on with life. Over the years, he turned his hand to local politics, gaining a degree in philosophy, factory work and eventually, hard labour. Now, Light In The Attic is set to commit Cold Fact and Coming From Reality for an entire new audience, who can finally find out why - halfway across the world - Rodriguez is spoken of in the same reverent tones as The Doors, Love and Jimi Hendrix.

Press Color

photo:
a propos:
Gatefold Blue Vinyl 2xLP With Obi Strip + Poster + MP3 Download Code, Lizzy Mercier Descloux may have come of age in Paris, but it’s in New York’s Lower East Side that she really came alive. Great overvieuw of her work here - check!!The French punk pioneer, a friend of Patti Smith and Richard Hell, moved to New York in 1977 and soon immersed herself in avant-garde poetry, performance art, and punk music.Closely associated with the founders of ZE Records (home to Was (Not Was) and Kid Creole & The Coconuts), Descloux released her debut album, Press Color, in 1979, revealing a punk-funk sound that positioned her as the French answer to the UK group The Slits or New York’s own ESG. Just as The Slits gave "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" a makeover fit for warehouse parties on their celebrated Cut LP, Descloux’s album revealed a penchant for the unexpected cover version too. It kicks off with a brilliantly rhythmic take on The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown’s Fire–a hit, like Marvin Gaye’s in 1968. There’s also a version of Lalo Schifrin's theme from Mission Impossible that appears to predate the breakbeat scene by a good twenty years. Elsewhere, we hear echoes of Serge Gainsbourg’s Afrobeat-influenced work, Blondie’s disco-inflected punk, and Talking Heads’ world music-inspired art pop.Βacked by guitarists/bassists D.J. Barnes and Erik Elliasson plus drummer Jimmy Young, Descloux creates a naïve musical world in which rhythm is everything—not a byproduct of the song but the reason for its existence. It’s neither played nor sung with any great skill, but it has feel and character in spades and a looseness that’s all too rarely achieved.Of course, an artist with song titles including “Tumor" (a cover of “Fever" with amended lyrics) and "Herpes Simplex" is never a shoo-in for mainstream acceptance, and like many a No Wave classic, the album sold little. Now regarded as a cult classic, this Light In The Attic reissue is presented in an extended 18-track edition, collecting much of Descloux’s work, including "Morning High," recorded with Patti Smith.Descloux returned to Paris upon scoring a contract with CBS and soon found herself travelling to Africa to research the Afrobeat sound experimented with–from afar–on Press Color. The hit single "Mais où Sont Passées les Gazelles?" and album Zulu Rock followed. By the 1990s, Descloux had turned her back on music in favor of painting and writing, which she continued until her death in 2004. Her playful spirit lives on in this album.
