As 10 Mais Boogie Vol 1

photo:
a propos:
BACK IN STOCK What exactly is Boogie? Is it a genre, an era, a style? Colours, clothes, textures are all part of its make up. Boogie is the “top shelf” music of the 80s. Anything from this era that brings along Moog synths, vocoders, DX7s, or triggered Oberheim drum sounds, is Boogie! Brasil has a huge archive of underground dancefloor heat. Dierent styles of music ranging from Macumba to Samba, MPB to Pop, Electro to early Hip-Hop, were all stung by this Brasilian “Boogie Bug”, cleverly orchestrated by geniuses of the style, Robson Jorge, Lincoln Olivetti, Junior Mendes, Mister Sam, Sergio Sá, to name a few, were the backbone of uncountable projects by big names of Brasil ´s pop and underground music scene during the 80s. This compilation brings together a bunch of non-obvious “compactos” (33 RPM 7” singles), most of them, promos, which never saw the light of record store shelves, but instead sat for years in the dead-vaults of radio stations or ended up in second hand shops, flea markets, church basements to junkyards. We, SDB Discos, are excited to put together this eclectic selection inspired by the best in Brazilian 80s music. In this compilation we gathered 10 rare Boogie hits from very well know maestros of the genre such as Tim Maia, Cassiano, Tony Bizarro and other underground artists like Elizio de Buzios with his only recording, the funky boogie joint “Tamanqueiro”, Gaby Whiskadão featuring the disco hit “Super Amor”, the B-Boy Crew Electric Boogies with their very fresh early 80s rap hit “Break Mandrake” as well as the very obscure group called Let ´s Dance featuring their version of “Riguera” sung in Portuguese entitled “Dance com a Gente”. Even after so many years, Brasil’s most obscure boogie gem is yet to be found on a long diggin’ session thru thousands of records full of weird looking haircuts, somewhere near São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. This project is dedicated to all the “Boogie Heads” doing what they do best, keep searching!

Fenix

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
With all the cosmic energy and masterful musicianship you’d expect from the three-man orchestra, Azymuth rise from the ashes! Continually pushing the boundaries of jazz, funk, electronic music and disco, as expressed through their signature samba swing, the Brazilian mavericks have recreated the energy of those seventies’ sessions which would launch them into international recognition and confirm their status as one of Brazil’s most successful bands.Since the passing of keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami in 2012, remaining members Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros have worked tirelessly to keep the spirit of Azymuth alive, and to continue the legacy of Bertrami’s genius. But Fênix also marks a new era as the Azymuth trio is complete once again, by special guest keyboardist Kiko Continentino. A hugely talented pianist, composer and arranger, Kiko has worked with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil and Djavan, and the fresh energy and inspiration he has brought to the group is undeniable. The album also features Brazilian percussion legend Robertinho Silva, one of Brazil’s most important and influential players. From the disco-carnival title track to sunny jazz-funk head-nodder Orange Clouds, through to the deep-space samba Corumbá, Azymuth have drawn upon five decades of consummate craftsmanship - which coupled with their endless desire for experimentation and improvisation - has resulted in a 10-track journey encapsulating the full spectrum of Azymuth’s brilliantly coloured expressionist fusion.

Brasileira

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
An original copy of the Brasileira LP by Brazilian singer Maria Rita Stumpf has been on top of collectors' and music lovers' wishlist for the past couple of years, since "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" broke out and cast a spell worldwide - from Japan to Brazil, from Norway to South Africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. For the lucky ones that could listen to her whole album – and get to know other gems such as "Lamento Africano/Rictus" and "A Cidade"– it is clear that it is an ouvre that more people should have access to, not only an elite of listeners and connaisseurs. The good news are that the LP will be available again in its entirety in a new, glossy, loud and clear pressing released through Selva Discos, a new label run by Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser (the DJ/production duo known as Selvagem) in partnership with JD Twitch's Optimo Music. It's a legit reissue overviewed by Maria Rita Stumpf herself, the music being remastered from the remaining DAT tape of the original release and artwork faithfully updated by Brazilian design studio Colletivo, featuring liner notes by the singer/songwriter. Here’s an extract from Augusto Olivani’s and Millos Kaiser’s (the duo behind the DJ/production unity Selvagem and also Selva Discos) sleeve notes about the Brasileira LP reissue and the label’s launch“We were aware of the originality and rarity of this album since we put our hands on a copy of the Brasileira LP a few years ago, but it took time to learn that Maria Rita from ‘Kamaiurá’, the track that carried us away as soon as we first heard it, was the same Maria Rita with whom one of us knew since childhood. To reissue ‘Brasileira’ became a life mission. Also, it turned to be the seed that allowed Selva Discos to bloom.”And another extract, taken from Maria Rita’s recollection on the serendipity that triggered the this release -“Many years passed until I got a call from a close friend saying that his son, whom I had known since childhood, was my fan. I found it funny... I was slowly returning to music after years of directing Antares, a company I created and that brought thousands of artists to Brazil. He was a DJ who played my songs at the Selvagem parties and as he said, did not know that I was me, the same Maria Rita who worked with his father. This was a plot twist, a movie thing.”Maria Rita Stumpf is owner of Brazilian production company Antares Produções, responsible for bringing international artists to Brazil for the past 30 years, such as Philip Glass and Mikhail Baryshnikov. After distancing herself from the music business since the Brasileira original release, almost 30 years ago, she’s now back in the game.Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser have been working under the alias Selvagem for the past 5 years, standing by their monthly residencies in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, releasing edits and reworks for labels like Beats in Space, Disco Deviance and Disco Halal. Now they’re also behind the label Selva Discos, whose mission is to unearth and update exquisite, overlooked Brazilian music - not without the aid of JD Twitch from Optimo Music. The follow-up to this first release is a reworks 12" featuring a remake of "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" produced by Selvagem & Carrot Green (based on a new studio session with one of the original session musicians, Paulo Sergio dos Santos from Uakti) backed by a Joakim remix of "Lamento Africano/Rictus", to be released shortly after the Brasileira reissue.

Grito Selvagem

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Released in 1974, Téo Azevedo’s first album Grito Selvagem (“Wild Shout”) is an irresistible blend of soul and rock with an unmistakable Brazilian character. As many other lost gems of time past, the album found little commercial success, and still during the 70s Téo turned forever to the true Brazilian popular music – the forró, the roots of sertanejo and the rhythms and traditions of Brazil’s often forgotten countryside – becoming, from then on, a genuine cultural reference in Brazil not only as musician and composer, but also as a poet and researcher of popular folklore, being awarded the Grammy Latino prize in 2013.This career turn also contributed to push “Grito Selvagem” onto the dusty and forgetful shelves of time, until its rediscovery in recent years by DJs and record collectors. With lyrics reminiscent of the life in the city and the countryside, the album is one of Brazil’s forgotten treasures, with arrangements and production by Téo in partnership with maestro Daniel Salinas – producer / arranger very active in the Jovem Guarda movement, and known to collectors for his 1973 album Atlantis-, ten tracks which deliver the unmistakable groove you’ll only find in Brazilian records from the 70s. If you like Luiz Gonzaga, Tim Maia, Jackson do Pandeiro or Gilberto Gil, get ready to hear Téo Azevedo and his Grito Selvagem!
