The Japanese producer and DJ Kuniyuki Takahashi is the subject of Music From Memory’s latest retrospective compilation with ‘Early Tape Works - 1986-1993’. Composed of two volumes, the compilations gather together a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tape only albums, highlighting a fascinating early period in Kuniyuki’s musical output, one of which little is known."After discovering the world of nightclubs in Japan around 1986, and the seemingly boundless freedom expressed there through music as well as art, Kuniyuki became inspired to experiment with electronic music. Excited by the possibilities of new music technology, he would begin to gather together a number of, at that time, reasonably accessible and inexpensive local keyboards, drum computers and recording equipment. This became for Kuniyuki a way in which to explore music not as such made for nightclubs, but certainly inspired by them. Setting up a home studio in his hometown of Saporro, Kuniyuki would record extensively during this period with the equipment he had gathered together, equipment such as Roland’s Juno60, TR-606, TB-303, Casio FZ-1, Korg 770, Boss DE-200, Foster A8 and a Yamaha MT44 track cassette recorder.Driven to develop a musical language derived as much by an exploration of music technology and a desire to create new sounds, Kuniyuki was also looking to evolve the possibilities of what he refers to as a ‘new Oriental sound’. Early Tape Works - 1986-1993’ then brings together two albums of material which not only highlights the evolution of Kuniyuki’s own work but also of Japanese electronic music as a whole."

The Mexican platform Comunité returns with its second outpost in the form of a Various Artist package showcasing some of the core players featured on the 2018 bill of the festival. Through a heap of selected works of both regulars and newcomers – COM002 offers a glimpse of the festival’s signature curation of eclectic tastes, from prime-time floor fillers blended in with experimental acoustic sorcery.The 12” kicks off with a notorious collaboration between two regulars of the Tulum-based event: Tijuana’s Soul of Hex mind-bending classic approach to house music amalgamated with Mule Musiq’s Kuniyuki and his complex synth work – culminating in Dampe, a 7 minute joint-effort between Mexico and Japan. A2 continues in the vein of Cuba’s Alpha 606 – a fresh artist debut on the label. Through staggering hi-hat work and filtered synth pad beds, the Miami based artist showcases his signature electro style that blends An undoubtable latin rhythmic influence with drum machines and LFO-grooved melodies forming “Shadow”.On the flip side, Mexico City’s techno veteran Itzone takes the floor with an introductory ambient piece featuring a vocal narrative that highlights inspirational and mystic concepts–serving as both an interlude as well as a commencement to the rest of the package. Comunités regular JoSep takes on the torch afterwards, providing his always floor-ready 4/4 hypnotic debauchery and shining a light On one of the festival’s core aesthetics. Closing off the second instalment of the label, Mexico City’s AAAA offers his signature plate of modular synthesis-based experiments, welcoming into his realm of apocalyptic concepts simultaneously to a soothing closure of the record; a magnifying glass into one of Mexico’s front-running creational platforms.

Our long awaited reissue of Caribbean Jazz Fusion masterpiece Doubout Pou Gadé by Guadeloupean musician José Manclière is now available. Co-produced by Pierre-Edouard Decimus, José has cooked a really personal & singular record with amazing experimental composition merging Gwo Ka, Jazz-Funk, Biguine with an early electronic synthetic production. This ultra rare album privately distributed in the West Indies has now reached the Holy Grail status amongst collectors. This is definitely a real masterpiece with deep tunes like Syka a fierce synthetic jazz funk hybrid with incredible clavinet, synth and trumpet solos halfway between Placebo and Fabiano Orchestra. Vini Couté E Tann' is the amazing funky biguine we choose to compile on Kouté Jazz with incredible piano and guitar solo respectively by Patrick Jean Marie & Gilbert Coco. Tipi Fanm', is another wicked tune gwo ka percussion laden jazz tune. The music composed here by Dave Grusin for this superb film is both funky and jazzy and on a par with Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin's best soundtracks of the early 70s. Peter Yates who had directed 'Bullitt' knew who to go for when it came to outstanding musicians and Grusin was certainly one of the best young composers in Hollywood at the time. He would sign another more famous score in 1975 with "3 Days of the Condor" but The Eddie Coyle soundtrack recorded two years before is even more stunning. It plays like a hypnotic slow-burning suite and is performed by the cream of the LA jazz scene including John Guerin, Chuck Rainey, Tom Scott, Bud Shank and percussionist Emil Richards.Amazingly the score never got released on vinyl when the film first came out in 1973 and Wewantsounds are now proud to make it available on vinyl for the first time and on CD.First Ever LP releaseRemastered from the original tapes with one bonus trackLiner Notes by UK journalist and musician David ToopGatefold Sleeve with Artwork by famed Alternative Movie Poster designer Oliver Barrett
