Fill In The Blank

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Before any of the excitement could die down, Kev Brown hasn’t let off the gas. In less than 2 months after his long awaited and critically acclaimed Homework album, the latest release entitled Fill in the Blank is nothing short of the perfect surprise for the hip-hop world. In the famous words of Kev, this is just “another classic joint!”. Classics are synonymous with his legacy and if you release 2 classic albums back to back in under 90 days, not only is your work ethic setting you apart from your contemporaries, but the talent and quality of your product is the real standout. In the vein of Homework, Fill in the Blank continues the same formula of pairing sporadic beats and raps in an unorthodox, yet seamless presentation. The two projects may share similarities, but as an artist, Kev Brown is all about evolution. The mixing is tighter, the beats are bolder and his rapping is more aggressive. Some may observe that this album is more polished than the previous, but “the grit” he is known for is still prominently audible. As a vocalist, Kev has found a great balance of being smooth, concise, unapologetic and passionate with his honesty, love for the craft and ?ashes of dry humor. Making a guest appearance as the in house DJ, Damu the Fudgemunk exclusively handles all of the scratching. The album may be called Fill in the Blank, but the audience will state the obvious. At 20 tracks, there’s no mystery in Kev Brown’s creativity or his skills as producer/rapper as he blends vocal tracks with instrumental pieces and even throws in a few complimentary interludes. This is what the fans want. Collecting cosigns from Large Professor, Diamond D and even Questlove from the legendary Roots was seen on social media praising Kev’s recent output. Dr. Dre’s Pharmacy show on Beats Radio recently included some new Kev joints in their popular playlists / programs too. Also notable is the fact that Brown is just returning home from a European tour in which he used the tour dates to announce the surprise release of Fill in the Blank. Responding to a frenzy of hype, Redefnition Records proudly designed and packaged the new album on black vinyl printed with full color artwork. The cover art features images of the artist in his hometown neighborhood of Palmer Park made famous by boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and located in Landover, Maryland. While listeners have been instructed to Fill in the Blank, Kev’s agenda is to fll up the year with continuous projects.

Delve Into Classical Moog

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Kev Brown has done his Homework and he’s back to teach us a new lesson with his Delve Into Classical Moog.Artists are often measured by not just talent, but their portfolios. Pursuing one idea after the next and absorbing inspiration from an array of sources, some of the most memorable and storied artists are also great storytellers. With over 15 years in the business, Kev Brown has consistently been at the forefront of hip hop production. His instantly recognizable yet often imitated sound is a fabled treasure that makes his legacy not only a work in progress, but a work of art. With such history, one might ask, what’s left? If you ask Kev Brown, he’ll assure you that there’s unfinished business and still untapped territory to explore. 50 plus years ago it was a similar mentality that propelled visionary Robert Moog to the peak of what we classify as electronic music. Moog’s adventurous engineering in synthesis was not just a creation to house his discoveries, but an open source universe that musicians of all ages, backgrounds and genres would develop into the infinite artistic space of today. From pop to rock to jazz to even country & western, there’s no style of music that hasn’t been graced by the Moog synthesizer. Hip hop is no stranger to this beast. Beginning in the early days of the 80’s all the way to the sounds of Dr. Dre’s G Funk to Dilla’s Detroit takeover, the Moog is well traveled. Along it’s journey, Kev Brown got acquainted with the sounds of this instrument through his own rite of passage. Who knows where the last chapter will conclude, but since Kev is far from done, he’s proud to unveil his latest experiment.Complete on colored vinyl and original artwork partially sourced from Moog waveform documents including Bob Moog’s original hand drawn schematics, experience “Kev Brown’s Delve into Classical Moog.” Intended for explorers of sound and beyond.

Homework

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
The DMV’s own, Kev Brown has announced his frst solo rap album since 2005. Hailing from Palmer Park in Landover, Maryland specifcally, after a 13 year hiatus, the producer/MC has fnally prepared the sophomore sequel to 2005’s in?uential cult classic, I Do What I Do. Entitled, Homework, Brown and Redefnition Recs have partnered to release an LP the game has been missing for too long. Now 13 years is a long wait, but don’t think Kev has been idle in obscurity. He has been involved with several collaborative projects, garnered tons of production credits and released over a half dozen beat tapes during that time frame. It is also important to note that he was in no rush to drop another rap album and preferred to compose Homework organically and at his own pace, in the comforts of his own home, hence the title. Though Brown is known as one of hip-hop’s elite producers from heavyweights like Diamond D, Pete Rock, Busta Rhymes, Peter Rosenberg, 9th Wonder and Jazzy Jeff, he is a man of many hats.Kev Brown’s debut album was groundbreaking in so many areas that the recording itself and Kev is cemented as legendary. It would be no surprise that hip-hop would ask for the next installment and he’s nowhere near done leaving his mark. Homework is a seamless nonstop exhibition of KB’s range. Kev raps confdently and wisely throughout the album’s 27 tracks. Lyrically it’s personal, introspective, comedic, observatory and witty delivered in Kev’s smooth baritone style. Vocals are equally complimented by instrumentals all produced by the man himself and ?uidly morph into instrumental compositions too good to be considered interludes. The album was composed using several different samplers and recording technologies, but the vibe is never compromised.Homework is the perfect game plan for today’s climate and for those who haven’t, do your homework on this man. You won’t be disappointed

Burners

photo:
a propos:
Fresh off the heels of his groundbreaking album “The Reflecting Sea” with MC, Raw Poetic, Damu the Fudgemunk’s latest collaboration is with longtime friend and fan favorite, Flex Mathews. Preparing to drop their album in the coming months, the 2 have assembled a hearty EP consisting of 2 cuts and specially arranged instrumentals from the upcoming full length entitled, “Vibrations & Dreams”. Featuring the lead singles Burners and The Answer is Yes, the EP is sure to reel in hip hop fans and music aficionados alike. Some may remember Flex Mathews from the Damu produced cult classics, The Handsome Grandson EP (self released) and Live from Wonka Beats (Redef). Others may have encountered him on the road during his busy tour schedule or his recent debut solo album, “Hi, I’m Flex Mathews” with Unown (Oddisee’s Good Company). Both Flex and Damu have found ways to individually and collectively garner interests in their talents. With a running time of over 35 minutes, it was only fitting to call this release an EP. Launching the A-side is, “Burners” featuring California rap pillar, Blu of Blu & Exile fame and Boston’s finest himself, Insight (Y Society). The three MC’s spark the mic in a charismatic lyrical exhibition showcasing distinct styles from each personality. Providing the track, Damu the Fudgemunk locks a tight groove fusing ambient atmospheric noises and worldly textures for 10 mins and counting with extended DJ solos. All 4 parties reach the top of their games on Burners and create a one of a kind sound for hip hop in 2018. The posse cut is complimented, by the crowd pleasing call & response anthem, “The Answer is Yes”. This time, Flex is joined on the mic by his DJ, Damu. The duo presents a confident and fun perspective into staying positive and living the good life. If the lyrics aren’t enough to captivate the audience, the chorus is sure to catch the listener by storm to prevail that “Yes” is the answer. Musically this selection covers all bases of a hit record. The beat combines flavors from the West coast G-Funk, jazz, East coast hip hop and Go-Go which has the power to appeal to many audiences. The two hope that the songs message will inspire the masses to do their best and have a great lifetime. Side B of the EP continues with full instrumental versions. Fans of Damu’s last solo album, Vignettes will recognize how the lengthy production and arrangements of these 2 tracks pick up where the style of Vignettes left off. Whether you want good good hip hop songs or craving an extended program of instrumentals, Flex Mathews and Damu the Fudgemunk’s EP is built to satisfy.- Limited edition of 500 units- 36 Minutes of music, entirely produced by Damu The Fudgemunk- Features Blu of Blu & Exile and Insight (Y Society)- EP to be followed up with a 2LP later this spring

The Reflecting Sea (Welcome To A New Philosophy)

photo:
a propos:
As music continuously evolves, times change and new ideas and movements come & go. All of this functions in tandem with scientific, technological, social and political advancements in our society. The biggest component to that evolution is the people. There are creators and consumers. One cannot exist without the other. Throughout art, the audience defines quality, but artist has the power to introduce change and shift perception. Execution is key. The masses are always hungry for something fresh. Sometimes we're at the forefront of new trends and sometimes we find comfort innovating the past. No matter what, musicians have a responsibility to bridge the gap. Raw Poetic and Damu the Fudgemunk meet all of the above. Produced entirely by the artists, the new album "The Reflecting Sea" revisits sonic textures of yesteryear and combined with their own distinct ears for music, have created something uniquely foreign for the music world in our time. Speaking of the times, Raw Poetic's lyrical subject matter is nothing short of relevancy. Speaking from an observatory perspective in addition to his own personal experiences, the album's content is infinitely relatable.Although known primarily as hip hop acts, both Damu and Raw P stretched out to expand what the genre is known for. The combination of elements from the mix of live instrumentation, improvisation and sampling to the range of styles including jazz, fusion, rock, electronic and soul make The Reflecting Sea unlike anything else. Captured and recorded in it's rawest form, the album is honest expression. Masterminding the festival sounds is Damu the Fudgemunk. His voice is absent from the recordings, but his presence is immediately noticed throughout the 40 minute exhibition. Packed with tons of beats, tons of scratching, original compositions, upbeat and signature atmosphere, there's no question who's behind the boards. With the average tempo of over 100bpm, this is one of the most energetic releases in Redefinition's catalog. Raw P and the Fudgemunk aim to revitalize listeners of all types with their original sound. They call it "The Reflecting Sea: Welcome to a New Philosophy."Raw Poetic (MC), hails from the DMV area by way of Philadelphia. In addition to several collaborations with Damu the Fudgemunk, he's recorded 6 albums as a member of Panacea, 1 album with K-def, 1 album with Kev Brown and recent features with Brous One in which all have been met with critical acclaim.Damu the Fudgemunk (producer/DJ) is a DC native who co-owns and operates Redefinition Records. With several successful releases as a solo artist, his music has garnered a reputation in the last decade for it's consistent quality and conceptual structure.

Never Off (On & On)

photo:
a propos:
Known to many as the group Y Society, Insight the Truncator and Damu the Fudgemunk celebrate 10 plus years of friendship and a creative partnership that hold the two in high esteem of their fans. The MC & producer's new 7" is a compelling display of why the duo have always been at the top of their game despite their reserved output since debuting as a team in 2007. Surprising the world at the top of the year with their full length, "Ears Hear Spears" was a great way to sound the alarm for the excitement of new activity.Selective by nature, Insight and Damu's calculations have served advantageous in making moves and presenting listeners with the right music at the right time. The latest incarnation of this truth can be heard in the previously unreleased b-side track entitled "Pyramids to the Ghetto."Although it was recorded in 2008, it was archived and remained unreleased until now. Now in 2017 this particular song couldn't be any more relevant in how the artists analyze the effects racism of the past & present and it's correlation to black plight throughout the Americas (both Insight & Damu drop verses on this track).Continuing narratives of such legends as Public Enemy and Jeru the Damaja in which the track title quotes, the group individually presents short essays in rhyme form that give a candid account of what they've witnessed as black U.S. citizens living in the 20th and 21st Century. Not only are the social effects on the table for examination, but the positive and negative impacts a racist society has had on black contributions to art and culture are discussed. For the songwriters, "Pyramids to the Ghetto" is therapeutic in which harsh realities are confronted in an unapologetic manner contrasting the previous socially charged material in Insight and Damu's back catalog. For the listeners, it's a history lesson and a call to motivate us all that history doesn't always have to repeat itself even when it's been the norm for centuries. Adversity and oppression historically have hold some back and made some stronger, but acknowledgement is the first step of progression. The A-Side, "Never Off (On & On)" speaks on just that. It's a roadmap to dealing with everyday adversity, maintaining faith in self and striving to reach your full potential. Insight presents sermons of encouragement to the everyday person over the Fudgemunk's uplifting beat. The producer chimes in on the chorus with a few words of his own that insists to keep on your path and never fall off. The old saying goes, "Life ain't easy", but the group knows success is not unrealistic. "Never Off (On & On)" was the debut single from the debut album, "Travel at Your Own Pace" which has remained a staple in Insight the Truncator's and Damu the Fudgemunk's legacy. This the song's first official reissue and it's first appearance pressed on a 45.

Ears Hear Spears

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Redefnition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop’s most multi-talented artists, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman. Insight returns to the spotlight after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing, areas in which he found great success. This shouldn’t surprise longtime fans who may remember in as early as 1997, Insight created his own website, Insight.fm which featured an interactive SP1200 and forums. This was rare during the pre-social media era, long before having a web presence was a part of an artist’s everyday operation. Building a strong reputation for his live performance, his on-stage capabilities included not only rapping, but also producing, DJing, and even live drawing-while-freestyling and interacting with audience members. The triple threat from Boston (MC / DJ / Producer) has dedicated his life to his creativity and his diverse portfolio and resume is a true testament to the kind person Insight is on and off of his recordings. Credited for mentoring and being instrumental in the career beginnings of many of the staples of Boston’s current Hip Hop scene, and beyond, Insight also assisted a young D.C. native known as Damu the Fudgemunk, who later matured into an esteemed solo artist in his own right (and co-owner of Redefnition records). The 2 would frst collaborate on one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 2000’s as Y Society on 2007’s full length, Travel at Your Own Pace. Through this collaboration they formed a brotherhood that today is well into its second decade, bookmarked by this latest release. On Ears Hear Spears, “The Truncator” passionately speaks his mind through rhyme while “The Fudgemunk” handles all production. Throughout 10 outstanding tracks Insight delivers a diverse lyrical exhibition over a then 20-21 year old Damu the Fudgemunk’s beats. There’s an undeniable level of directness and sincerity in his lyrics which are artfully assembled in a manner that will astonish literary buffs, yet permeate the lives of everyday listeners alike. Pick up a copy of the album on vinyl, Cassette Tape or CD now. Vinyl version includes printed lyric sheet. Album also available to stream or download on all digital channels.

1996 Beat Tape, Vol 1

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Aptly titled, “1996 Beat Tape Vol. 1”, DJ Spinna’s latest instrumental album features 18 original beats all produced on the EMU-SP1200 & Akai S950 circa 1996. With over 25 years in business, the Brooklyn native is tied to nothing short of greatness and a legacy of diverse extensions since his beginnings as a house DJ in the late 80s. Many know Spinna for being in the elite group of seasoned party rockers where his resume includes collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Spike Lee, Michael Jackson & Prince (Soul Slam) tribute parties and several US/international bookings a month. Others regard him as one of house music’s best for his well orchestrated dance tracks that blend jazz, soul & funk, caribbean and latin themes into his trademark, “Intergalactic Soul”. Producing in the mid 90s with his underground duo, the Jigmastas, Spinna acquired national recognition for remixing Das Efx’s, Microphone Master single. He would gain larger recognition for his classic remix of De La Soul’s, Stakes Iz High single originally produced by the legendary Jay Dee aka J Dilla who became a friend in addition to being a contemporary. After a deal with Rawkus Records and producing some of Eminem’s early official appearances, Spinna achieved placements as a go to beat maker for legends, veterans and new MC’s. Though DJ Spinna has found continued success away from his roots, he has always satisfed his core audience whether producing for Homeboy Sandman, Phonte, The Jigmastas or his own solo projects.”1996 Beat Tape Vol. 1” is a rare peek into his deep archive. Much of the material was sourced directly from aged dat tapes and ?oppy disks from the year 1996. Don’t let the 20 year lapse mislead that these compositions are primitive to today’s standards. The 18 track fully instrumental LP proves the advanced production techniques and sampling ideas Spinna employed are still ahead of it’s time long before much of the resurgence of 90s revivalist themes from today’s artists. The “1996 beat Tape” is the “Real McCoy”. All music was produced before computers, before accessible home studios and before instrumental hip-hop was a category. Many of the beats were made with vocalists in mind. Constructed on turntables, the EMU-SP1200 and the Akai S950, historians will appreciate the album cover designed by Joe Buck which depicts intimate photos of Spinna in his studio with the actual gear used to create the album’s contents. This is only the frst volume and the debut venture between Redefnition Records and Spinna’s own Correct Technique Records. With 2 plus decades of unreleased material, who knows what the future holds, but history shows that when DJ Spinna releases an instrumental album, they sell fast.- LP pressed on orange vinyl- Limited edition vintage instrumental collection from legendary producer, DJ Spinna- Will be supported by video content of Spinna in his studio, discussing his career and production techniques
