Last Night/That Good Thing

photo:
a propos:
Limited to 300 copies "Last Night" featured in Prosumer's landmark Litte White Earbuds podcast - the last of 200 curated by the influential blog. Featuring a combination of Jill Scott's smooth vocals, shuffling percussion and saintly keys, it's easy to see why this track has seen enduring support from the likes of the one-time Berghain resident, as well as Alex Nut and other NTS DJs. "That Good Thing" marries another RnB vocal to a rough-and-ready beat to maximum party-starting effect

Kebab Dreams EP

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Hands up who's fantasized about an extra-large doner kebab with all the trimmings? Well, Irish duo Brame & Hamo certainly have. Ironically, "Kebab Dreams" is much tastier than your average late night takeaway, with eyes-closed Rhodes notes, hazy chords and sparkling synth motifs riding a bouncy and bumpy deep house groove. The sweetness continues on the slightly more driving "Cert City", where jazzy samples and a relentless bassline are expertly combined with restless, live-sounding house percussion. Finally, they up the tape hiss and Theo Parrish style jazz samples on "Retch Wretcheness", a swinging saunter through dusty deep house territory full of hooky stabs and fizzing cymbals.

The Musical Stylings Of...

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
It's been a while since Detroit producer Javonntte last treated us to a collection of tracks, with his last fresh material dropping way back in 2008. Since, he's kept himself busy by playing instruments on records by Mike Grant's Cool Ppl project. There's much to admire on this five-track collection, from the fluid deep house bump of "Bounce" - whose killer bassline impressively drives things forward - and wavy late night positivity of "Chaka's Revenge", to the classic US deep house brightness of "My Life". The EP concludes with two versions of "These Words"; the super-soulful, vocal dreaminess of "Mix 3", and the similarly warm and comforting "Original Instrumental".

What Am I Here For?

photo:
a propos:
Soulful fusionists The Dangerfeel Newbies are an interesting proposition. Certainly, the Atlanta-based trio has made an impression on NDATL Muzik boss Kai Alice, who's decided to release a trio of his own interpretations of Hariet album highlight "What Am I Here For". He begins by delivering a classic soulful house interpretation, placing the original's superb vocal and twinkling jazz pianos right at the heart of the action. Those superb piano lines come to the fore on his Piano Instrumental, before the Late Night Mix sees Alice sauntering off on a hazy, duvet-warm deep house tip. Best of all, though, is the bonus remix of "Swingin' With The New Jacks", a fizzing, rolling deep house groover replete with vibraphone solos and battling jazz horns.

Island Of Dreams

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
No more pool parties, no more red-hot cars on the road to Miami; with his third release (and second album) on Antinote, Parisian producer D.K. gives his music a new direction. While his previous 12”, Love On Delivery (ATN016), was a perfect soundtrack to your endless nights spent on Outrun on Sega Genesis, Island Of Dreams will more likely incite you to turn on your old Mackintosh and play Myst again. With Evening Shadows, D.K. slowly unveils a very personal virtual landscape, letting us approach his island of dreams, while Ivory Forest already invites us to loose ourselves in a wood in which the babblings of synthetic birds can be heard. Play On is more of a beach affair, an invitation to rest on numeric sand in front of a digital sunset before a highly melancholic Journey To The Sun and an initiatory dive in a sea of pixels on Memories. The music on Island Of Dreams is not designed for the dancefloors and Raindrops is the only housy excursion of the record, but it resonates with so much intensity and energy that the song wakes you up from the dream you’ve fallen into. Finally, High On The Sea, the ethereal conclusion to the album, is not a goodbye song to D.K.’s island for it leaves in your mind a window open onto this synthetic world, to be entered again.

Lemonlime

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Leron Carson may not be the best-known Midwest producer, but he has history. Carson's first release came way back in 2001, with Theo Parrish putting out a track he'd recorded way back in 1987 and has appeared on Sound Signature intermittently over the years. This new 12" from Carson for Theo's label is HEAVY! "Lemonline" is a deliciously breezy concoction, with Carson's jazzy piano riffs working in perfect unison with bouncy, Latin-influenced drum rhythms. Flipside "Sofnthik", on the other hand, sounds like a previously unheard 1980s Chicago deep house concoction, with warm, loved-up chords swirling around a clattering drum machine groove. Whether it was recorded 30 years ago is unknown, but it certainly boasts a similar lo-fi, analogue feel.
