Henry Stone's Miami Sound

photo:
a propos:
When Terry Kane - a sound engineer who was barely twenty years old at the time - built an 8-track recording studio above Henry Stone's office space in the Hialeah area of Miami, he probably never envisaged that he was laying the bedrock for a creative hub that would spawn over 25 gold records and over 100 million record sales worldwide. In the process, it would help to make Henry Stone a legend of American music. At one end of the spectrum, warehouse boy turned global superstar Harry Wayne Casey - better known as leader of K.C. & The Sunshine Band - was pumping out disco classics on a massive scale with ubiquitous airplay and sell-out shows. At the other, Rodney Matthew and his group Formula 1, were relying on the might of the T.K. distribution machine to propel them into the spotlight. As remarkable as their 1977 masterpiece on Du-Vern records was, it inevitably failed to have the seismic impact of The Sunshine Band's commercial dance pop.For every success story like T-Connection, with their firebrand funk-disco fusion and major label achievements, there were equally talented acts such as Stevens And Foster who also called on Stone's services to showcase their vision: judging by the scarcity of original copies of their self-written and produced modern soul jewel on Jerri Records, they also failed to reach beyond the Sunshine state, save for the rarified ears of collectors and connoisseurs. The sheer amount of records that came out of those modest premises at 495 SE 10th Court - about 8km from Downtown Miami (as the pink flamingo flies) - is mind boggling. With a huge roster of in-house labels as well as production and distribution deals, label boss Henry Stone was a passionate, busy, and exceptionally well connected man.Stone would nurture the early careers of the likes of million seller Betty Wright, as well as provide a platform for Milton Wright and Leno Phillips (her older brothers) to express their creativity. Clarence Reid (AKA Blowfly) and Willie Clark penned a raft of amazing tracks for acts such as Jimmy 'Bo' Horne and Little Beaver (AKA Willie Hale, who would also write a wealth of material for others), while T.K. in-house band Miami's own Robert Moore also released records on yet another T.K. imprint, Blue Candle. The music scene in Miami and indeed, Florida, at the time was fertile and moved quickly with the times, there were hit-makers and risk-takers, shining stars and those who never went far.As a living document of Henry Stone's remarkable legacy, the diverse styles and ideas coming out of Miami-Dade County and beyond, as well as a glimpse at the successes and near-misses achieved by a dazzling array of artists at the time, this collection serves as an invaluable insight.- Press Page with images and text: http://athensofthenorth.com/henry/- first press of the 2LP includes holy grail bonus 7"- Brand New - Thousand Years- 18 incredible tracks from the Man who invented Disco- Selected by Rare Disco connoisseurs Euan Fryer & Ian Wright- Release will tie in with up and coming award winning documentary 'The Record man' about Henry Stone and his music in Miami. AOR Global Sounds Vol 2 1975 - 1983

photo:
a propos:
Following the recent acclaimed first edition of AOR Global Sounds compilation, DJ and producer Charles Maurice’s dug even deeper through international lost productions to create a sequel for this series. The result is AOR Global Sounds Vol.2, a new compilation made of 8 forgotten and rare tracks produced between 1975 and 1983 in all parts of the globe. At the end of the 70s, many artists over the world were deeply influenced by AOR’s famous stars such as Steely Dan and his classic Aja LP, looking to reach the same attention to sound production and details, and this specific Westcoast style mixing together Pop-Rock standards, with Soul (sometime Disco) and Jazz influences. From Renée Geyer Band in Australia, and Boban Petrovic in Ex-Yugoslavia, to Carol Ray Band in France, and Greg Yoder in Hawaï, Charles Maurice and Favorite Recordings built another hot selection of lost tracks clearly infused with this special AOR touch, in a Soulful and Disco way.Fully remastered from originals with the same attention to sound quality than in first edition, AOR Global Sounds Vol.2 (1975-1983, selected by Charles Maurice) is presented by Favorite Recordings in a deluxe vinyl version, housed in a tip-on jacket and as CD.

Soul Sok Sega

photo:
a propos:
Following successful excursions into rare tropical and island sounds with the ‘Sofrito’ series, ‘Haiti Direct’ and ‘Calypsoul 70’ albums, Strut Records turns its focus to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius for a new compilation, ‘Soul Sok Séga’. Séga first developed as an insular music and dance form after slaves arrived on Mauritius (then île de France) from East Africa and Madagascar during the 17th to 19th centuries, using Créole language and rhythms played on the large ravanne circular drum, the triangle and the maravanne, a box filled with dried seeds. Séga was essentially frowned upon and marginalised by the Mauritian bourgeois until the 1950s when singer Ti Frère began to play a more Westernised fusion of séga. Through Ti Frère and his contemporaries like Serge Lebrasse, the music began to be popularised during the ‘60s and became fully accepted after the ‘Night Of The Morne’ event in 1964 as the Créole community asserted ist cultural identity. ‘Soul Sok Séga’ documents the heyday of séga in Mauritius during the 1970s as a new generation of contemporary artists broke through. Jazz, soul, funk and rock elements all began to be effortlessly infused into traditional séga folk roots to create some inspired fusions. A talented new wave of artists including Jean- Claude, Claudio, Marie Josée and Roger Clency became domestic stars and began to take the music to international stages for the first time. Meanwhile, cult artists like the James Brown-influenced Ti L’Afrique, Coulouce and Christophe all enjoyed a more brief but important moment in the spotlight. Since this era, séga has now been adopted as the national music of Mauritius and the original ‘70s music is a revelation for any fans of tropical music and world sounds. Strut’s album features extensive sleeve notes from long time Mauritian cultural champion, Percy Yip Tong, including new artist interviews, photos and original vinyl artwork. The compilation is by DJ duo La Basse Tropicale (Natty Hô and Konsöle), based in the neighbouring island of La Reunion. All formats (1CD / 2LP / digital) are unmixed, with all tracks never reissued internationally since they were originally available. An accompanying European tour featuring Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio with an all-star band of original musicians is planned for Summer 2016.KEY POINTS- first official international compilation documenting séga music from Mauritius- key artists involved in album and promotion including Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio- features exclusive artwork by Lewis Heriz and sleeve notes by respected Mauritian cultural journalist and promoter, Percy Yip Tong- strong addition to Strut’s tropical reissue range following the Sofrito series, Haiti Direct and Calypsoul 70- supported by DJ dates by album compilers La Basse Tropicale with plans for séga legends live tour during 2017

Night Shift

photo:
a propos:
As with previous Wall of Fame releases, Night Shift is an all-star affair, with a quartet of producers each delivering a track that blurs the boundaries between re-edits, remixes and original production. Trujillo kicks things off with the gentle nu-disco breeze of "Midnight Plane", where soft-focus disco beats and eyes-closed pianos are joined by an undulating electronic bassline and reheated chords. The Silver Rider dives into filter-heavy disco-house territory on the bumpin' "Crown Royal", while Ooft recruits Highlife/Huntleys & Palmers man Esa Williams for the deep disco meets deep house warmth of EP highlight "Don't Go Near Water". Finally, P-Sol necks a fist-load of happy pills and reclines with a pile of lazy, sun-kissed jazz-funk records on the sleepy "Set Me Free".

10 Years Of Tsuba Part 1

photo:
a propos:
We present the first of three 12's to celebrate our 10th anniversary. For the A side Detroit Swindle radically rework Sometimes into Not Another Sometimes, a killer raw analogue jam that demonstrates a real development of the DS sound. For the B1 we're buzzing to finally release an original track from Matthew Styles, who's been on remix duties 3 times over the years, with the infectious house of Off The Grid.Last and by no means least The Carter Bros give us Tempting Disco Fate, a rolling disco loop with the mother of all bassline changes at the end of the track.Look out for part two dropping in April featuring a Jimpster edit of Galcher Lustwerk, Fort Romeau remixing the first ever Tsuba release from Williams and a Tsuba debut from Roy Comanchero.

The Very Polish Cut-Outs Vol.5

photo:
a propos:
All good things come to an end, and The Very Polish Cut-Outs is no different. The fifth sampler will be the last in the much loved & long running series. For the farewell record, label boss Zambon has selected five unique reworks from top producers from Poland and beyond.Side A is aimed at the dancefloor. 'KIEDY BYLEM MALYM CHLOPCEM' was the biggest hit in the long career of Tadeusz Nalepa, the king of Polish blues. The irresistible, smooth guitar groove is combined with conscious lyrics about different views of what's important at different stages of life, served in the form of a conversation between father and son. Miod crew transform this beautiful song into peak-time killer, tailored exactly for the needs of a modern dancefloor.Moscow's man of the moment Beard In Dust edits 'BIALA SOWA, BIALA DAMA, BIALY KRUK' by Kram into a flawless disco funk bomb, fuelled by cheesy synth action. A slice of Eastern European B-Boy disco breaks.Side B brings more ethereal and psychedelic flavours to the table. 'NA KOLANA PASTUSZKOWIE' comes from Laboratorium, Poland's answer to Weather Report. Their unique take on fusion is remixed here by Daniel Drumz, one of the heroes of Polish hiphop & beat scene. This longtime turntablist leaves his rap roots and travels to the psychedelic coast to bring you an amazing piece of Baltic Beat.Last two tracks are chopped and looped by Australian hero Carpentaria in a truly Balearic fashion. 'ZA OSTATNI GROSZ' by Budka Suflera charms the listener with dripping pianos and a misty, endless soft rock groove (with added swirling synths played here by Brennan Green himself), while ZACZAROWNE MIASTO by Kombi is a dark, cinematic piece of slow synth pop.It may be the end, but The Very Polish Cut-Outs finishes off in fine style.

Kev Beadle Presents Best Of Inner City Records

photo:
a propos:
Kev Beadle is back on BBE with his new compilation Best Of Inner City Records.Created by industry legend, MMO Music Group founder and true godfather of karaoke (but that’s another story) Irv Kratka alongside producer Eric Kriss, Inner City Records was formed in 1976. During its decade or so in existence, the label put together a formidable catalogue of jazz music and was voted Record Label Of The Year in 1979 by the International Jazz Critics Poll. As well as ‘classic jazz’, the label also gave a platform to more avant-garde material and dabbled in the emerging ‘jazz fusion’ sounds of the day. Fondly remembered by jazz lovers everywhere, the label boasts a particularly fervent fan-base in London, where many of its releases found favour in the underground dance clubs of Soho and Convent Garden. Fittingly enough, London DJ and tastemaker Kev Beadle is the man chosen to put together this very special compilation of Inner City’s finest moments. Having previously curated projects for labels such as Blue Note and Cadet, Kev has dug deep in the crates to emerge with this gem of an album. From the soaring vocals of the jazz-fusion classic ‘The Other World’ by Judy Roberts to the irrepressible dance-floor fire of Eddie Jefferson’s ‘Jeannine’, ‘The Best Of Inner City Records’ serves as a wonderful and eclectic introduction to a label which is rightly remembered with a level of affection which borders on reverence.KEY SELLING POINTS• limited edition double 180g vinyl and premium quality gatefold packaging• First ever retrospective of the label with full support from the founder Irv Kratka• Coverage assured on relevant websites & magazines, with full press & radio campaign in key territories
