Bath House Etiquette Vol 9

Further heat from Gay Marvine, brightening up every floor with powerful uplifting DJ tools, the essence of the heat of the party. This time we have lost disco classic that just gets you burning, the funk of War given the perfect disco treatment, Diana giving it to you like only she could (and later Michael would, his exact staccato style), and luv tempo of factory favorites who later had a member who completed her PhD in the cultural politics of the house music aesthetic in 1995.

Hot Sauce

photo:
a propos:
Food and funk music have a strange connection, which is hard to describe, and even if tried, probably delivers somewhat messy and unappetizing results. There are plenty of 70's funk LP sleeves that can be referenced for evidence. With all this in mind Timmion offers its very first 12" single lifted from the upcoming "Happiness In Every Style" album by Nicole Willis. The track features Nicole rapping her way through a highly funky potage. She promises home cooking, biscuits and everything else for anyone listening, peach cobbler for dessert to top things off. It is certain that when hearing this call, one can do nothing else but jump straight to the dancefloor. Those who want to skip the main-course and head straight for the dessert, can flip the disc over, and be exposed to the hypnotic balearic-funk business that just kills things for 6 and a half minutes. A bit like Isaac Hayes and Barry White originally meant it to be done, but à la mode by the The Soul Investigators. The instrumental deserves to be pimped for across-the-board appraisal.

Money $ex 04

MONEY $EX continue to mine a rich seam of new wave sample House talent from Germany's creative heart. Beating things down on this outing is Alex Seidel.Rubbing shoulders with luminaries like Max Graef & Glenn Astro seems to have brought out the best in this new producer as he skilfully lays out a familiar collection of roughed up sample jams and synth interludes, as always, Hip Hop provides a sturdy foundation for this House, but make no mistake, we're living very much in the future.

Tartare

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
As summer fades and the days get shorter, Souleance have been hard at work in the kitchen cooking up their new EP 'Tartare'. The French production duo of Fulgeance (Ed Banger / Musique Large) and Soulist (What The Funk? / The P Show) have delivered another EP of surefire party starters, taking the sample-heavy template of previous releases, and adding a deeper disco-house edge to stunning effect. The 8-track EP opens with 'Hustle' - a clear statement of intent from Souleance - the shuffling synth-heavy percussion signposting the slight shift in direction, but with it's sights aimed firmly at the dance floor. The track also features regular video collaborator Emile Sacre on keys and vocoder, this time in his music production guise as VECT. Many of you will be familiar with 'Secoue' (released earlier this summer as a digital only single). The Kompa-influenced track has become a DJ's favourite over the festival season and is now finally available on vinyl. Elsewhere 'Ratatouille' starts in more conventional Souleance territory with an infectious horn-led break, before developing into a Giorgio Moroder-inspired disco stomper. Also of note is the elastic bassline-fuelled 'I Got It', which displays a lightness of touch and subtlety rarely seen in dance music. This more mature sound, fused with the DJ-friendly identity of earlier releases shows the progression the duo have made since their debut back in 2009. The artwork that has been a feature of Souleance's releases is present again, with Alice Dufay providing stunning illustration in her idiosyncratic style. The EP also features two remixes - Debruit remixes the title track, blending the Souleance sound and putting his unique stamp on it - in his own words 'an imaginary place where ancient West Africa cohabits with 80's New York'. Finally Dutch newcomer Uffe takes on 'New York', retwisting the keys to create an MPC-style house groove - the perfect conclusion to Souleance's best EP yet.

Black Music

photo:
a propos:
Olivier St.Louis (the artist formerly known as Olivier Daysoul) releases his Debut EP. Olivier was born in Washington DC of Haitian and Cameroon heritage, but spent most of his childhood studying in the remote countryside of the UK. During his youth Olivier's CD and sometimes cassette collection would range from hip hop, RnB to Garage and British rock. Olivier remained in the Uk and completed a Bio Science Degree in Oxford but could could suppress his real passion for music. After graduation he began a 'Jekyll and Hyde' life. A scientist by day, recording artist by night. He went on to receive significant international attention for his work as a featured singer/songwriter back then still under the name Olivier Daysoul. He worked and toured worldwide with various artists including Oddisee, C2C, Onra and Bibio, Hudson Mohawke as such as other producers from the Warp Records family. Despite all of this, Olivier felt something was missing ... A true reflection of his own voice and sound. A hiatus from feature recordings and some deep introspection found Olivier discovering his love for blues, rock and funk. Many late night guitar sessions resulted in new soundscapes. A new chapter was opening. The former 'Daysoul' moniker exchanged for his original birth name 'St.Louis'. Producing and writing all his own music and playing his own instrumentation, Olivier St.louis was embarking on a new road. The Black Music EP coming out on Jakarta Records gives listeners both old and new a taste of Olivier's true music palate. When asked his thoughts on his artistry he states:"no punches pulled ...no compromises ... Just me".

Rhythm Is All You Can Dance Ep

photo:
a propos:
The heavy, percussion driven analogue sound that is their trademark comes in two tight packages. The title track is all snaky rhythms and squelchy riffing and comes complete with exactly the kind of dense, break heavy remix that we would expect from compatriot, and top buddy of the band, Wolf Muller. Flipside 'Revanche' is a sunnier affair, deft touches on the acoustic guitar and lighter percussion, but no less the party starter because of it.
