Early Sounds presents this compilation of Qvark’s demo recordings (early 80’s band from Milan) which is an important find to define the sound of late 70's and early 80's Italian club sound.Milan, Italy, 1983. In the midst of the 80s economic boom, which gave an injection of optimism after the heavily political 70s, a group of young local musicians meet every night in a basement to rehearse and record a peculiar breed of Italian disco music.Originated from the ashes of various other projects, and rooted in the broader jazz-funk tradition, the group creates music which is equally inspired by contemporary fusion as well as by the first wave of the italo-disco sound. Over approximately 3 years the band has recorded and played live, until the dismantling of the project towards the mid 80's.Fast forward 35 years and the genuinely mediterranean flavor of Qvark's demo recordings are still enjoyable, both for the actual resurgence of the Italian disco tradition and for the groovy quirkiness of a project which has been too long forgotten. After an intense work of audio restoration of such tapes, heavily affected by time, Early Sounds presents a compilation which is an important find to define the sound of late 70's and early 80's Italian club sound."

Space Operator

photo:
a propos:
Ultra spacey, pitched down, cosmic anthem based around fellow Italian band Traks' "Drums Power" record. Orange vinyl – 500 copies hand-numbered It takes the rhythm track and adds a wealth of killer sound FX, synth washes and sinister vocoded voices inviting us to join them in some intergalactic space travel. Released in 1982 on Full Time records off-shoot Good Vibes, "Space Operator" would not sound out of place on DJ Harvey's infamous "Sarcastic" mix, this one's a real bullet for all the Italo, cosmic, esoteric Disco freaks.

Stand Up

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Repress from 1983 Italo classic on blue vinyl - 500 copies hand-numbered .Produced by Maurice Cavalieri, the man behind another famous italian band: Firefly. 'Stand Up' has that typical italian sound with its stompin' beats and snares, blunt synthbass and moody chords. Mr. Disc Records was one of the more underground italian labels releasing italo disco and funk.

Kriminal/Il Cobra

photo:
a propos:
One of the rarest and most sought-after Italian holy grail soundtracks ever is finally back from the grave! Originally released in 1966 on Beat Records (45-BT 024), the KRIMINAL main theme was written by Romano Mussolini (Raymond Full in the opening credits) and Roberto Pregadio for this sleazy crime-pop movie directed by Umberto Lenzi, and based on the cult Italian comic hero. Actually, this could be considered one of the best swinging jazz-beat themes from the 60s, with its wonderful horn, acid vox continental organ, and terrific rhythmic guitar. On the B-side, we have another jewel from 1960s Italian spy-pop cinema: the main theme of “Il cobra” (from the Mario Sequi’s movie). This swinging and uptempo jazz-beat piece, written and conducted by the Spanish composer Antón García Abril, is a poisonous shake with a supergroovy mood – a double-sided floor-filler, not to be missed by any serious soul-jazz DJ.
