Takes the 2 tracks from their 1983 single and add 2 unreleased tracks in the mix. Another strong 12'' on Cree!At the beginning of the 1980s, Fifi Yawson and some other members of the Ghanaian band, Gem Movement, moved to the city of Hanover in Germany. There they met the Trinidadian drummer Martin James who had previously played with the 20th Century Steelband in England for several years. Thanks to his work as a studio musician, Martin was well connected in the Hanoverian music scene where he met sound engineer Thomas Rugel during a recording session. Together with the Ghanaians Fifi Yawson, Francis Dansei, Sam Asante and Tom Blay they formed the group Umoja i-nity. Other members of the band were Christine Clinton and Nyemah George Williams (who both had previously worked with Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba) as well as Ingo Erlhoff and Jochen Rose from Germany.

The Electronic Tapes

photo:
a propos:
Unreleased early Algerian synth electronic by Ahmed Malek, compiled and co-produced by Flako. In the early 1980s, Ahmed Malek was already in his 50s , when he discovered synthesizers and electronic music for himself and started to experiment with sounds. The result was a mixture of ambient synth music, field recordings he made in Cuba and a wide variation of different sound experiments that he also presented as different avanguarde music festivals in Cuba and the US. None of it was ever released but we got a huge box of master tapes from his family and we're happy to present this different side of Ahmed Malek's music. It was compiled and co-produced by Flako, a fan of early electronic and synth music. This is not a remix album though, Flako's aim was to create an album out of 2 hours of material that sounds like it might have if Mr. Malek would have finished it himself before of his death. Fully approved and licensed from the artists family. The album comes with an informative booklet with liner notes, an interview with Flako regarding his approach towards the production and unseen photos. We will also release a third album by Ahmed Malek which will be more in the vein again of the music he is known for and this album will also be previously unreleased.

Modern Music

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Al Massrieen: Disco, Funk and modernized Arabic Pop from Egypt! In the beginning of Habibi Funk, our search was focussed on vinyl records. Around a year ago though, we got to the point where we realized that it became substantially harder to discover music, that we enjoyed and hadn't heard before. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s.In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s. Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band’s versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like “Sah” to psych rock like “Horreya” or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as “Edba Mn Gded”. I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn’t a strong compilation of the group’s songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos.

Senora

The comeback of the growing bin‘s favourite private german Jazz Funk gem.Spring is in the air and groove is in the heart for Hamburg’s most loveable record label. Following the freak beat festival of Wolf and Wandt’s ‘Instrumentalmusik’ comes a release that’s been in the pipeline since the organic imprint first took root; the first reissue of the beautiful ’Señora’. Beguiling and brilliant, this private press princess makes you want to dance, dream and do cartwheels, then breaks your heart when you realise you’ll never meet her - a rare beauty indeed. So it’s time to let Basso play cupid and introduce you to the love of your life.Eagle eyed associates might recognise the sleeve as Basso’s everyday avatar, chosen in tribute to his favourite jazz-funk record of all time. Originally released in limited quantities back in 1981, the self titled ‘Señora’ was the sole release from a quartet of German groove maniacs, coming together in one ecstatic union of rhythmic precision, smooth riffing and melodic mastery. Take opener ‘Paul’ for example; a continent away from the West End, this sublime slice of raw guitar, silken keys and gliding bass could have made Mel Cheren proud. From there we’re taken on a journey through the syncopated slide of the jazzy ‘My Way, Your Way’, the samba sway of the mild and mellow ‘Easy Going’ and the poetic piano of ‘Pearl’, a triumphantly esoteric tone poem to close the A-side. ‘Señora’ ups the tempo on the flipside, galloping through tight triplets, fusion guitar and mind expanding synth play. The B2 brings a strolling bassline and tender tonality, executed with all the ease of the Sunday morning which dawns on the extended and expansive cooler which brings the LP to its final emotional release.

Tabu

a propos:
Band from Trinidad & Tobago, led by the internationally renowned lead guitarist guitarist and songwriter Michael Boothman. Tabu and So Dey Say were recorded in 1972 and would remain Family Tree’s only recordings. Limited edition of 500 copies worldwide!Family Tree represented a new generation re-discovering Trinidadian folk music forms and giving them a contemporary treatment. Family Tree infused old Shango rhythms in their new sound and were the first to experiment with steel pan fused with standard instrumentation.Tabu is a cover of a Cuban standard made popular in Trinidad by 1950s calypso musicians Cyril Diaz and his Orchestra and So Dey Say was an original composition by David Boothman.Although they only ever recorded these two songs, the band toured with Derek Walcott's Trinidad Theatre Workshop and forged long standing musical connections with some of the country's leading musicians.

a propos:
Kuzich (Perth, AUS) is no stranger to the music industry - having toured extensively as a drummer with acts like Tame Impala, Ta-ku, Drapht, The Growl, Cameron Avery. 823 is a creative label founded by the artist Ta-ku & also the numerical representation of the phrase 'Thinking Of You'. It represents the appreciation for the people/ideas/places that inspire us and push us forward. As a label we are proud to present a series of musical releases that showcase the artists musical & visual endeavors. The artwork is shot by the artist themselves & each release has an accompanying photo zine that acts as a visual story that compliments the music they wrote at that time. It was only fitting to have Ta-ku’s friend/collaborator & band member, Kuzich to start this series off. Ta-Ku: Kuzich is a multi-faceted, multi-talented multi-vitamin.Equal parts down to earth and otherworldly.Having spent years traversing the earth, making sonic accompaniments for untold tales, his dusty backlog is finally being excavated from the basement. Dawn Chorus chronicles the absurdity and beauty of the everyday.Take a minute…With Kuzich first official release, we get a taste of his unique versatility & multi-instrumentalism in every track. The Perth (AUS) born musician is no stranger to the music industry - having toured extensively as a drummer with acts like Tame Impala, Ta-ku, Drapht, The Growl, Cameron Avery & many more. In between tours he has always been known to float & explore corners of the earth that lead him to meeting colorful personalties & creating soulful eclectic music. He’s always hoarded his own music - which has lead to layers & layers of passion, perspectives & percussion. The 12” vinyl version comes with a visual zine - all of which photos are taken exclusively by Kuzich on film with his Ricoh GR1s point & shoot camera. The cover art was also shot by Kuzich on film at Mt Rinjani, Indonesia.

Dr. Dundiff releases “Muneybeats” as part of the “Beats from Jakarta” series & continues what Ta-ku and Shuko started years ago.Dr. Dundiff (done different) is a Hip-Hop/Neo-Soul producer based out of Louisville, KY. Dundiff has gotten into producing around 2010 and has been a busy bee ever since with a huge number of projects under his belt, from producing as well as him rapping. Those who follow Jakarta Records might know the name from his ongoing collaboration with Otis Junior. They released their debut EP “1moment2another” on Jakarta Records receiving wide daytime airplay and recognition from French tastemaker Radio NOVA, as well as 1.500.000 Mio. Streams for their debut EP “1Moment to Antother” through Spotify & a placement on Radio Nova's “le grand Mix 2016” compilation.Muneybeats is Dr. Dundiff revisiting his roots in an all instrumental experience. “Put the most attractive beats on top. The ones that make you pull the car over and go, 'Wow, I need this be a right now.’ Those are the Muneybeats. Compact little tasty treats spanning a wide range of sounds while always sounding like Dundiff made them. He is currently also working on a new project with Otis Junior which will drop sometime in 2018 as well as their first Europe tour in summer 2018.„Beats from Jakarta“ is a series Jakarta Records kicked off some years ago with contributions from Shuko and Ta-ku, heavyweights in their own right, and we felt it would be nice to bring that series back when Dundiff sent us his new album. So here we go. „Beats from Jakarta“ part 3….
