Special Night

photo:
a propos:
There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn't fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is in fact a Living Legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term "retro-soul" when talking about Mr. Fields. You don't have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era the've only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. "Special Night" is a masterclass in soul music past and present.“I feel that every human being’s purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do,” says Lee Fields. “And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out music and keeping making better records.”Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering. Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. “When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I’m talking to my lady — literally, expressing the way I feel.” says Lee Fields. “You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I’m recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life”. For one example, he cites the song “Work to Do,” which tells the story of “a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing.” On “Make This World”, Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. The world was designed to last indefinitely,” says Fields. “We’re the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I’m hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through.” As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the boundaries “Never Be Another You” from the first note doesn’t sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A low tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of 2017.Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it.

Nothing More To Say

photo:
a propos:
The Frightnrs escort Daptone into the world of long-playing reggae with both the sweetest and the roughest record of the decade. Crafted under the meticulous eye of black-belt reggae mastermind/producer Victor Axelrod (AKA Ticklah), Nothing More to Say is a rocksteady masterpiece the likes of which has not reared it's head since the golden era of Studio One. However, you'll find no imitation here - none of the faux-jamaican cliches of lesser reggae bands. Like all things Daptone, this record is above all soulful and honest.

What Is Real?

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Strictly Rhythm is back on track after a summer hiatus with a double header from one of the most exciting producers in house music right now: the UK's Josh Butler. What is Real? and Innocence showcase Butler's talent at blending his love of classic house with fresh flavours cut for today's dancefloors. With over a dozen record releases to his name in a short career, Josh Butler is on the up. He's notched up notable partnerships with the likes of MTA, Noir, Cajual and MadTech, turned the heads of house music heavyweights Kerri Chandler, Marshall Jefferson and Pete Tong and made himself an essential fixture on the international DJ circuit.Butler broke through in 2013 with Got A Feeling on Chase & Status' MTA label, for which he picked up a beatport award, and followed it up with the No Frills EP on Kerri Chandler's MadTech imprint, The Situation and Portable EPs on Cajmere's Cajual, Feelings on Noir and a remix of Fatboy Slim feat Macy Grey's Love Life. He was awarded the prestigious Best Breakthrough Producer by DJ Mag for 2104.The DJ diary isn't too shabby either, with a posting supporting the legendary Chic on tour and two full summers in Ibiza at Sankeys under his belt, plus a US tour and clutch of festival appearances at the likes of SW4, Parklife and Secret Garden Party.

'I" Album Sampler

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Voyeur AKA Benson Herbert and Leo Picking, are the young pair that broke through back in February 2012 with a remix of Bombay Bicycle Club.Soon after Kerri Chandler invited them to release on his Madhouse and Madtech imprints. Before long the UK duo were sharing booths with the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Work, Dennis Ferrer and Cassy.'I' Album Sampler' is a limited EP of the more dancefloor friendly tracks which kicks off with the captivating production 'Lost In Paris'. The A2 sees 'Long Beach Island' feat. Kerri Chandler with rippling drums and numerous mesmerising nuances merged together. On the flip 'Patron Saint' generates a low-slung groove from start to finish, that features label head honcho Kerri Chandler. Last but not least sees the tribal percussion and soaring synths of 'Nina'.

The Last Raw Era

photo:
a propos:
Packed full of cinematic textures, plaintive vocals and dusty house grooves, The Last Raw Era is the stunning debut album from Hollis Parker: a vinyl-only love-letter to New York City that harks back to bygone days of US house music.House music albums can be tricky to pull off. More often than not they are little more than a hastily thrown-together collection of club tracks, lacking the cohesion or narrative themes that mark a truly timeless body of work. Hollis Parker's debut is one of the few of recent memory that bucks this trend, applying a hip-hop production aesthetic to an album with house music at its core, creating an immersive listening experience over the course of 10 deeply emotive tracks. The Last Raw Era is themed around two distinct love stories: that evolving relationship between two fictional characters, and the entirely real emotion Hollis wears on his sleeve about New York, calling it the foundation upon which I'm built. A hazy melancholy informs much of the album's tone, with obscure samples dusted off and given a new lease of life in songs that evoke the languid production of Moomin as much as the raw house cuts of the early US masters.Crafted in the old-school style, Hollis took a turntable, a couple of samplers and a stack of vinyl records and got to work, creating a musical tapestry from instrumental samples, snatches of movie dialogue and heartfelt vocals. The result is both familiar and absolutely unique, with Hollis looking to the past to produce something refreshingly free of clichéd house tropes. This album is basically a culmination of everything I've done musically up until now says Hollis from the techniques and musicianship I learned to the equipment I figured out how to use, the different genres I've created: it all comes together on this album. It's a love story that's also about a city, specifically a city that I got to know before the internet and social media, back in the 90s, or what I like to call the last raw era. From the simultaneously heart-breaking and uplifting 4/4 bounce of What You've Done to the dreamlike drifting of Central Park Love, The Last Raw Era contains individual tracks that are without question some of the most beautiful of the year. But this is an album that needs to be listened to in its entirety to be fully appreciated: a timeless gem with the power to take you to another place.

Big Mango Bangers

photo:
a propos:
Our second vinyl release features four tracks from our own Icelandic Moff & Tarkin. Big Mango Bangers gives us a good taste of the fresh style that the Vienna based producer has to offer. The A side has two great danceable house tracks, "Naked" and "I Got This" that should rock any good dancefloor with some superb sample action. The B side really ties up the record and features "Mutual Distraction" a house track with an 80's vibe and "Skutla" a synthony which could really break up and reset the mood as a DJ tool. Each tracks has a place and the record is a great example of the diversity we try to encourage.
