Searching For Sugar Man

The story remains one of the music world’s most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul.Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are releasing the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality – both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly “Sugar Man” and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician’s fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.Searching For Sugar Man, a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and then went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca, and the Sheffield Doc Fest.
Back in the late ‘60s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, Cold Fact bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled Coming From Reality and produced by Steve Rowland, Rodriguez drifted into obscurity, even being subject to rumours that he had committed suicide by setting himself on fire onstage.Cold Fact took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid-era South Africa. Banned by the government, the album became a country-wide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, working in construction and renovation (he also ran for mayor), Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away.Decades later, two South African fans, Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of Searching For Sugar Man.Both sides of the story, Rodriguez’s life in Detroit and the subsequent impact of his music in South Africa, proved fascinating to Stockholm-based documentary filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. His short documentary films for Swedish Television’s international cultural weekly show Kobra became the basis for such films as Men Who Stare At Goats (George Clooney) and The Terminal (Tom Hanks). The evolution of the financing, production, and filming of Searching For Sugar Man is as fascinating and complex as the life of Rodriguez himself.“I describe myself as ‘musico-politico’,” Rodriguez said recently. “I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time. Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like: We Want Jobs and Stop the War – I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa.”

A two track edit 12, done by Lotus Land's Tom Noble. We dont know what the originals are, but they clearly will do some serious damagge when these are played out! Heavy heavy, Tip! Tom Noble is a well respected, and even more well travelled, scholar of boogie, disco, funk, and points in-between. He is also co-owner of the oft celebrated Lotus Land record shop and label, and brother to Andy Noble, of the much-hyped Kings Go Forth, a 12-piece modern soul band who releases records on the Mr. C record label.

Danger Zone

Wow! A repress from this sublime boogie cut from 1983 that even made it to the top of the Rhythm & Blues charts at the time. A solid cut with a chunky electronic bassline, catchy horn riff and vocals (from Robbie M). On the flip T. Noble provided an instrumental also. Well recommended! The Midnight Express Show Band was the band from Robbie M, a Rock Island native from the Midwest area called the quad Cities, and has performed with performers like Roger Troutman and Zapp, The Temptations, War, The Dazz Band, The Chi-lites and more.

Moon Circuitry

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
This year, Theo Parrish seems to be doing his best to breathe new life into the careers of broken beat-era producers and musicians. Having previously released an excellent EP from Dego and Kaidi Tatham on Sound Signature, his latest missive comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer Ge ology and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter's brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of "Moon Circuitry" he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while "Escape On The Lodge Freeway" boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove. Both tracks are, of course, impeccable.

Obaa Sima

auteur:

Awesome Tapes From Africa surely scored one of the best reissues this year with the vinyl and CD edition of Obaa Sima, a quite startling album from Ghanaian musician Ata Kak that covered highlife, rap, pop, and more. The fact the discovery of the original tape was ATFA founder's Brian Shimkovitz original reason for starting the label made it all the more special. With copies of that album no longer in press, Awesome Tapes From Africa have tempered demand with a series of 12" releases featuring cuts from Obaa Sima. Here the title track makes the transition, pressed nice and loud at 45rpm (do try it at 33 too for a different vibe), whilst the slower electro funk-edged bliss of "Adagya" lines the B-side.

You Are Everything To Me

photo:
a propos:
James “Jima” Cappra is a Leo, who hails from Bean Town, and although he sang along with his idols, the Jacksons, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, he didn’t decide to go public until 1982.Troy DeVoe, a Sagittarian is also from Boston, Mass., and by visiting and observing, taught himself the keyboard in the mid seventies. His original melodies needed lyrics and that’s when he and his life time friend Jima got together. At first it was difficult to convince James that he was a vocalist, but by adding a rhythm section and calling themselves the “Cruise Band”, they were off and playing. The band lasted long enough for Cappra and DeVoe to know that they could work together, and it gave them more confidence. They worked with such artists as Planet Patrol, New Edition, Margo Thunder, Jay Dixon, Maurice Starr, and Larry Wu. James Cappra is Bobby Brown's brother. Troy DeVoe is Ronnie DeVoe's uncle from Bell Biv DeVoe aka BBDCapri and DeVoe’s first album of originals was “Get Street Wise”. Now still writing and arranging, they’ve added producing to their credits. Their new release is entitled “You Are Everything to Me”.
